2010 Football Schedule

Does anyone know anything about who we are possibly getting to finish our football schedule for next season. I think that we need to get a well known program ( if there are any that have slots left) to come to the dome. Im not sure which conferences haven't released their schedules but i would like us to play a team from the Mountain West like a TCU, BYU or Utah that or a Big 12 team like Nebraska, Kansas ( bring Turner Gill back to CNY for a game) or Texas A&M.

I highly doubt

that we’d try to schedule a BCS team or a ranked Mtn West team. I’m guessing we’ll fill in the last spot with a home game against a MAC or Conf USA school.

Screw that

schedule a MAC or CUSA gimme. We need to win football games. Thats why we backed out of playing VT

Let’s get back to a bowl game and THEN worry about scheduling competitively

I'm completely in favor of the Kansas State school of scheduling

Until we’re pretty confident of winning 8 or 9 games with two or three tough non-conference games and no more than one complete gimee (i.e. an FCS school or a bad non-BCS school), then we can go back to playing three Big Ten teams. Unless we join the Big Ten, anyway.

i think that MAC and Conference USA schools already have their schedules set for next season so we might not have a choice, especially since we are already playing Maine next season too

Then someone from the Sun Belt conference. Florida International or the likes.

by wildcatlh on Jan 17, 2010 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

I think we need to get a team that has some name recognition, from a good conference, but that has sucked the past few years…they should be the kind of games where if you win, people say, “hey, that’s a win over a BCS conference team” but if you lose, its like, “well, that was a team from a BCS conference…”.

Maryland, Vanderbilt, and Memphis are probably the best examples.

by stumpycuse on Jan 17, 2010 10:33 PM EST reply actions

No... that should be our 2nd toughest OOC game.

The Big East is a good football conference. We don’t have Temple, Rutgers, and Pitt as easy victories anymore. Miami, SU, Va Tech, and the better of WVU/BC started every season in the 1990’s with a guaranteed 2 Big East wins. And Pitt was awful.

Now… only Syracuse and Louisville are “easy wins.” And that is changing.

With that change, OOC scheduling only matters if you are in the top 5. Cincy didn’t have the OOC to move past Texas or Alabama. But how often is that going to matter???? Syracuse needs to worry about qualifying for bowls… not beating out the #3 team in the country for the national championship game.

A perfect schedule for me:

1. 1 interesting OOC game… either a past foe like PSU or BC or Va Tech or Miami or Notre Dame… or a new foe like USC. Not two of these. Not three of these.

2. 1 BCS school without any chance of being a top 10 team. I can live with Washington here, but think that is asking a lot. Prefer Northwestern, Duke, Vandy, Indiana, Rice, Washington STATE (if we must go west)

3-4. Two MAC or C-USA schools. Army/Nacy

5. FCS

If we can’t get a MAC or C-USA school next year to fill void… do a Rutgers and get a second FCS school. If we are 6-6, we are not going bowling anyway. I’d rather be 6-6 and not go to a bowl than 5-7 and not go to a bowl.

Winning against Howard was better for Rutgers than “well, we lost to Maryland.” Never schedule a game to rationalize a loss. That is what you do in basketball, which has ONE committee to decide placement.

The only thing that matters is wins right now. If not for final results, then for development of players and increasing confidence.

Well, here's the question . . .

Even though everyone wants the garbage win, will you hike it up to the Dome for that game?

Marrone (and the majority of fans) want wins. Gross and the administration want butts in the seats. If Maine was any indication, nobody is going to the garbage game.

Gotta support this team through something other than an ass on the couch and Syracuse in HD.

by Hoya Suxa on Jan 18, 2010 11:24 AM EST reply actions

you have a valid point

but I disagree with it. I think they have to worry about butts in the seats long term, and a team that gets to 6-6 and goes to a bowl game by beating a crappy non-conf team will be better in the long run for getting attendance numbers up.

by MrPlow99 on Jan 18, 2010 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

I ain't going to the dome anyway

Unless they pack up the campus and move it to San Diego. It’s a bit of a hike from here.

Starting in 2011

I’m all in favor of scheduling tough again. But here in 2010, if we have the opportunity to schedule soft, get another win and push ourselves over the top back into a bowl game, I think we’d all be willing to sit through one year of cucpakes in order to get back to normal. I say bring on Louisiana-Lafayette or North Texas!

rutgers/kansas state

i totally believe in that approach. a few years later, nobody remembers that several of kansas state or rutgers wins are over rumeys. even the gators do it. this year, florida international was the latest cannon fodder. i must say, that without doubt , the usual crowd of like 88,000 fans residing all over the campus was missing to some extent. however, a win is win, and u got so much push playing in the SEC, that it does not lower the computer bsc standings. the computers, which many of the anti bsc types dont like to admit, could care less about usc beating some team like washington state, 51-7. however, i dont think the computer is real big factor right now, with the bcs. here is the story: play some cheezy out florida team. FAMU or florida international. or that other school in the miami area, or like florida atlantic with howard schnellenberger. cause the more energy u can generate in florida recruiting grounds, the better. and its always nice to go to florida anyways. right now, next 2 days, gonna be mid 70’s say in fort myers beach, and even 71/72 in gainesville.there is absolute no reason to play schools like washington or usc, cept in bowl games, we never go out there and recruit anyones. cept for a stray ca juco player .same thing with the big 11. cept for donovan mcnabb/chicago land, and recruiting in norheast ohio.. cleveland, youngstown, etc, we never recruit there.if all else fails, play some mac team that dont have a clue, in ohio, say. like akron or youngstown state or ohio in athens. it worked for kansas state for a real long time, most of the time, the bowls folks and sportswriters were too tres estupido to ever realize that 33% of the teams they beat every year nobody had ever heard of. right??

by eiremist on Jan 18, 2010 12:16 PM EST reply actions

Only thing

about Florida is that they can get away with scheduling soft OOC b/c they play in the SEC where probably at least 5 of their in conference games are against really tough teams.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Jan 18, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

I think you mean

‘Everyone believes that at least 5 of their in conference games are against really tough teams’. Last year, at least, Alabama and Florida were the only tough teams in the SEC. No one else would have come close to Cinci, beat Pitt, or even beat WVU if they don’t do stupid stuff like WVU did against Auburn. I mean, UConn and South Carolina had the same record. UConn crushed South Carolina.

gaterville"

its always funny, the complete mass chaos and confusion fueled by drugs and alcohol at the gators home games. with like 90,000 wiped out people camped out all over campus with generators, big screens, sound systems. welcome to the campus resembling a state fair meets a rock concert. and it dont help with the stadium being like a quick 4-5 minute walk cross the street from the famous swamp" bar area! not for the faint of heart. game day. one thing i do wonder about is all the rednecks who hang out with their power wagons over by lake alice. the pic nic area.. i presume that they are armed and all. but do they really want to get macho with albert??the lake has its share of gators, but albert is the king.. 19-20 feet long , over 500 lbs.. been around for a long time on the campus.

the grobster" approach

however, dont schedule some token win" like a mac team from ohio if u are a coach like the grobster.. or its gonna be really a unhappy surprize.. non? talk about the absolute nadir of the syracuse football program.

by eiremist on Jan 18, 2010 12:34 PM EST reply actions

Heh

Yeah, that is the one fly in the ointment in all of this. I agree in scheduling the occasional cupcake to boost your win total, but for God’s sake, you have to actually WIN those games. No one killed Grob for losing to Penn State…they killed him for losing to Akron and Miami of Ohio, and for ALMOST losing to Northeastern (NORTHEASTERN!!!!)

Id like to see us play Army. Reasons: Either way its in NY. They are a D1 team so it counts. They are a running team and we can stop the run.

I DONT want to see us play a pass happy team like Bowling Green because our system leaves the DBs one on one.

wouldn’t be surprised to find out its them

traditonal" rivals

d’accord/agreed. as far as i am concerned, we should really stress playing tradtional games with the same teams as when we were independant. as in" round up the usual suspects" navy, army, maryland and penn state. and guess what? all within driving distance to some extent to upstate ny. and we do recruit for both b ball and football in maryland and pa. think marvin graves and carmello, local products from dc and baltimore areas. of course, i have to day, for the past say at least 5 years, we have not had a chance in the world to beat navy’s triple opton., so its good they were not on the schedule. and they are doing nothing but gettng even stronger. beat a down nd program twice, walked all over missouri in the bowl game. and nearly beat OSU IN COLUMBUS AT THE HORSESHOE THIS YEAR! and that qb of theirs is fearsome.. what most run opton or triple opton teams dream about, a quick and strong runner who can throw on the run downfield. so i say, bring back games with maryland, navy and army. who we used to play all the time when almost all east teams were independents

by eiremist on Jan 18, 2010 2:33 PM EST reply actions

Maryland

would love to see that. Navy could probably beat us next year so lets wait a couple.

BRING ON BOSIE

in 2012, when we should be better than now.

What does Syracuse do...SHUT IT DOWN. Nuff said.

fresno state

anytime, anywhere is their motto. and unlike boise state, shoot, it could give us some recognition with CA jucos players if we beat them bulldogs from the central valley".

by eiremist on Jan 19, 2010 6:24 PM EST reply actions

We'd

have to go to Fresno for one year. That’s how they do things there. And we’d have to play them there as late as possible. This year it was constantly 95 until late September. Rather play someone who we have some history with.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

as noted:

we should always look for games in areas that we recruit heavily. that is why penn state is a great rival game , maryland, also.. and any school in florida, tho i really dont like the concept of taking on the big 3" u know who, the miami most wanted list types, free shoe u, or the gators. lets be honest, that means running with the big dogs too much. better with florida atllantic, or central florida, famu, schools like that. the entire team would love playing in f lorida in say nov, and it gives su more brand name recogination. and i can state for a fact, just lee county, fort myers/ cape coral / area, has got more college prospects then whole states like minnesota, indiana, ct, mass, maine, nh, ri, vt, u get the drift. they in fact get colleges from all over the usa that recruit lee county.think that is where what is his name, the wvu running back is from.

by eiremist on Jan 19, 2010 6:30 PM EST reply actions

paterno/ penn shuck

it was never a mistake, they were like the kansas state of the east coast. they would actually play like say 2 big dogs a year. the rest of the time, schools like akron, temple, etc. the first big dog they would get real hyped up for. and also the second in their bowl games. pretty much, they have never gotten over the hump.. now adays. seems like that they have real problems with michigan and iowa. much less ohio state. it was very easy for them to exert max effert on 2 big games a year and coast for the rest of the season. but now in the big 11, they got too many other big dogs to contend with, they have not really challenged for the championship numero uno since they foolishly joined the big 11.plus all their male and female sports teams have to travel to iowa, wisconsin, mn, et al. and rivals like wvu , syracuse, pitt, from before, hardly exist any more. very stupid on their part. all because joe pa was greedy and did not want to go home and home i am sure, not only with us, but wvu and pitt. or share football revenue.

Ideal Schedule

With the Big East in its current form here is how I would want the schedule:

7 Big East Games
1 D1AA — Everyone’s doing it
1 MAC/CUSA/Army/Navy type team — Get 2 Home games for 1 road game
2 Traditional/Regional BCS teams — PSU, VT, BC, MD, UM, ND, etc…
1 Other*

*For the next couple of years we might want to get another MAC/CUSA type team to get the win total up. After that I would like to see us play other BCS private universities. Most aren’t that much better than us and make interesting matchups between schools with real student athletes. I’m thinking teams like Duke, NW, Vandy, Stanford, Purdue, etc…

Unless you are in the hunt for the national championship (and realistically how often is that going to happen?) the schedule outside the Big East doesn’t mean much. I would rather us play a tougher schedule to get more fans in the Dome, get some national respect, and if we do have a good team it would put us in a position to get us to a BCS bowl game.

One of the key contests in Syracuse's march to the national championship in 1959 was a titanic clash with unbeaten Penn State on Nov. 7, 1959 in University Park, PA. The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 7 and the Orangemen No. 4.

The 20-18 victory propelled Syracuse to the No. 1 in both the AP and UPI polls which they held for the remainder of the season to claim the consensus National Championship. This is the Universal Newsreel account of that contest.
