The Lichtensteining Of Syracuse Hits A Snag (Updated)

As of last week, freshman walk-on Ryan Lichtenstein was the only placekicker on the roster and therefore the likely choice to hold said duties once the season started.  I suppose it is fair enough however that HCDM thought it was in the best interest of all parties if there was at least a Plan B on hand.  If for no other reason than because you never know what's going to happen, who's going to leave and why.

Better late than never, it seems as though the Orange have brought in a new kicker to keep things competition-y.  According to the folks over at SyracuseFan and courtesy of SpazSports, SU has brought in kicker Jake Smith from good ol' Milford Academy.

Jake, who is from Pennsylvania (obviously, aren't all kickers?) kicked 59 of 59 extra points between '07 and '08 and went 5 of 7 for field goals.  He was also a formidable punter, averaging 41 yards per punt his senior year. On kickoffs, he landed 36 touchbacks on 45 attempts (80%) his senior year. He won the Top FG kicker award at Lee McDonald's Special Teams Solutions 5th annual college exposure camp in 2008 and was named to the area football All-Area team for both punting and kicking.

No confirmation yet for SU but expect something later today.  In the meantime, let's watch some kicks! (Video here as well)

Finally, an interesting postscript on former kicker Shane Raupers. Shane is going to be remaining at Syracuse University but he will lose his scholarship, obviously.  Guess that, like Hines, he just lost interest in playing football.  Is that a virus going around or something?

UPDATE: Donnie confirms that the Orange are recruiting Smith but he's not officially on the team just yet.

The Orange is involved in the recruitment of another kicker - Jake Smith of Cheltenham High School of Elkins Park, Pa. Smith was apparently headed to Milford Academy, but could be brought in immediately to provide some depth or challenge for kickoff and place-kicking duties. Marrone confirmed after practice that Smith is being recruited by the Orange.

How?

I know there isn’t much of a learning curve when it comes to kicking at the college level…but did this guy just happen to go to SU? Did he pick up the DO one day on his way to class and think well I used to kick let me hop the bus to the football wing and talk to Head Coach Doug Marrone.

I'm with you.

I mean, classes are about to start right? I don’t think universities just accept students several days before the semester starts, so how does this all work (without being an NCAA violation that is)?

No word yet

but if I had to guess, he’s not on a scholarship either

Class begins in a week…so where has he been? He must have already accepted and decided to come to Syracuse. Housing/Registration and all that doesn’t happen in 1 week. He also must be completely, oblivious to the headlines and news of the past month concerning kickers at SU.

“That’s not what we need at the kicker position”
“SU Kicker leaves team, down to 1 Kicker”

I’m confused.

Phew....

When I saw that headline I thought Lichten$tein had hurt himself. Now we can have a little competition for the starting spot.

Go, fight, and win.

Wait a Minute

He’s smart enough to score 1300 on his SATs yet he’s only carrying a 3.0 in high school? I’m half a retard and I had a better GPA than that………..

depends on the high school. A lot of schools have levels, non college bound, basic, honors and AP… colleges will weight these. So he may be a B student in the AP classes where as a kid could have a 4.0 in the non college courses…. its pretty hard to fail finger painting.

True

It just looks odd – I mean 1300 SATs impressive – especially when juxtaposed against a 3.0. Underwater fire prevention is a challenging course however

I thought coaches weren't allowed to comment on "recruits".

Would it make a difference if they’re not offering a scholarship?
