Worst Tragedy Of The Day: Jonny Is A Timberwolf(ve)

When Ricky Rubio went #5 to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Syracuse fans breathed a sigh of relief.  Surely now Minnesota wouldn't use their 6th pick on another PG, then Golden State would take Curry and Flynn would be all set to head to New York and play for his favorite team, the Knicks. Well despite the fact that Kevin McHale is gone, the Timberwolves aren't done making asinine decisions.

They drafted Jonny Flynn with the 6th pick.  Cuse fans on Twitter were...concerned.

Minnesota takes Flynn after Rubio at 6. Dejected.

Nooooooooo

WHAT.... THE...... F***!?

You sure Kevin McHale wasn't behind this pick?

Sit tight, all.  Taking two elite PGs back-to-back reeks of trade bait.  The question is, which one is less valuable to the T'wolves?  We shall see.

Well this just sucks

The only reason I was paying attention to the draft at all was to see where Jonny is going and now… I have to wait to see where Jonny is going. Why do I waste my time?

if there is a trade

it will be Rubio…with the rookie salary structure as it is they would have planned to trade the higher payroll…if they were going to trade Jonny they would have picked him with the 5th and Rubio with the 6th.

Although that might make too much sense.

Conflicting rumors swirling

Mike Waters just threw out Jonny to Knicks, other sources say Rubio.

Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician - The Syracuse blog that cares.

Either one is good for Jonny.

Knicks, he plays for his fav team. Wolves, he’s on the ground floor of a rebuilding franchise with a lot of young talent and can develop outside of the scrutiny of the NY media.

The 'Cuse is in tha house, oh my God oh my God.

Oh my god

Minnesota selects another PG! What on earth are they doing up there?!

they are saying

trading lawson to Denver for future pick…seems like they could have done more.

I wish they’d trade Flynn to the Nuggets.

Yay! He didn't go to NY!

Agreed. Also a 76ers fan.

Though not happy with the Holiday pick. Saw him a lot this year…didn’t turn out to be as good a defender as he was touted to be.

At 17, to get that kind of talent… I wanted Lawson, but it was hard to fault them for picking Holiday. If he lives up to his potential he’ll be something special.

We got Jordan Hill

This is the second year in a row we screwed up. Yes, we had no chance at Jonny, but we could’ve used a PG in particular. Meanwhile we get stuck with west coast flop Jordan Hill.

for the record

I think it’s a fallacy to say that an SU player being drafted #6 is a tragedy. It may not be an ideal situation for JF or for us as fans, but seriously…SU had a player drafted #6 in the entire draft.

by stumpycuse on Jun 25, 2009 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

I don't agree with that. As Cuse fans we have seen Cuse players drafted in the 1st round for half this decade.

To be excited or content that we had a player chosen that high is a bit beneath a program of our level. Syracuse produces some good nba players and gets players drafted fairly regularly.

You Sir, are clearly too biased.

We are talking about Syracuse Basketball, not Lacrosse; the same Syracuse basketball team that had previously missed TWO NCAA tournaments.

Admit that you breathed a sigh of relief just to know that your beloved Orange were actually going to the tourney (let alone as a 3 seed).

Flynn was selected as the 6th best player in the draft, which is by all accounts an incredible feat (and at least 10 spots higher than most people originally thought he would get drafted)….Villanova went to the Final Four, yet they didn’t have a single player in the top 10 of this year’s draft, neither did Michigan St…..

Other than Melo, when was the last time SU produced a top 10 player? This doesn’t exactly create Syracuse as a dynasty of magnificent players. Not to mention the fact that previous SU phenoms, such as Greene, Warrick, and GMac went either undrafted, taken late in the 1st roundf, or completely sucked.

I love SU as much as the next guy, but le’ts be realistic here…the last time we saw a pick 6 was ARob vs Northwestern, and this time it’s way better.

There is a huge difference between being drafted #6 and #15, and the day that I am not content or excited about a lottery pick in SU basketball, is the day that I will cease to be an SU basektball fan.

I am biased because I do post regularly on a Syracuse blog. But that doesn't mean that I'm not right or don't have a point.

Syracuse has had 4 players drafted in the 1st round this decade alone. 2 top 10 picks among them. Next year with Wes Johnson presumably leaving after 1 year, we will have 5 first round picks in a decade. That’s good for any program and only a handfull of programs can say they can do that with the consistency of Syracuse. For a program of our level to get excited over a #6 pick, is like storming the court over a win against Villanova.

I hate the TWolves

What the hell are they thinking drafting Flynn and Rubio. Flynn isnt a shooting guard. If they didnt take him, he would’ve been a Knick.
