Go West, Young Sean Williams
This past season, scholarship center Sean Williams averaged 2.3 minutes per game in 12 appearances. That he almost exclusively appeared in games that were blowouts tells you what you need to know. That he didn't log a minute in the 6 OT epic UConn game also tells you what you need to know about his place on the depth chart. Since most of SU's big men return and new ones are coming in, it didn't seem like Williams would be seeing any further playing time in the near future.
For a while now, we've all assumed it would just be a matter of time before he transfered. And so he has, according to FoxSports.com's Jeff Goodman:
Cal State Fullerton has picked up two transfers – Sean Williams from Syracuse and Andre Hardy from ORU
No confirmation from SU just yet but there's no reason to doubt this news. Williams gets the chance to actually log some minutes on the court and Syracuse gets to free up his scholarship for someone who can have a chance at doing so in an Orange uniform.
By all accounts Williams is a great guy, a fun teammate and I'm sure everyone wishes him well. It's a shame, as he came to us with tremendous upside potential. Rated the 20th best center by Rivals.com and 28th best by Scout.com when he came out of school, Williams just didn't live up to the hype. It happens.
Williams was part of the 2007 recruiting class that included Donte Greene, Jonny Flynn, Rick Jackson and Scoop Jardine.; Crazy that only two of them are still here.

20th
He was actually rated 20th? Wow, I did not know that – I do know he didn’t even start for his high school, which was a bad sign. This is a good move for everyone involved. Funny how a few months ago people were worried SU wouldn’t have enough scholarships for the upcoming year. No need to worry about that now.
Good for him
Sean was always a guy youd see chillin on 2nd floor porches on Euclid in shorts and an extra tall beater. He will enjoy california.
Ranking that kid 20th best anything was crazy. How do these scouting sites rank a guy that has zero athleticism, is as slow as George Mhursan and as weak as a ballboy that high? His basketball skills were non-existent when he came to SU, and they didn’t look like they improve a whole lot. That said, good luck to Sean back home. Hope he is able to grab a few minutes here and there for them.

a center with “zero athleticism, slow as George Mhursan and as weak as a ballboy”…sounds a lot like Thabeet.

Perhaps you should assess the college careers of the centers ranked from 17-25 that year, to see how Sean compares. The number “20,” alone and without context, means nothing.
A ranking of 20th best center is not “that high.”
That said, i too wish him the best of luck. I hope he’s able to maintain his SU friendships.

Rick's
the only one walking away from syracuse with a degree of those five. I would be shocked if scoop makes it the next three years in orange.
So what does this mean to our current roster?
Does Syracuse get to sign someone else now….or does this open the door for someone else or what?

It opens the door, and since we’re Syracuse, I’m sure we’ll fill it.

williams...
…was ranked 20th because of his potential…when he entered Syracuse, he had a longer wingspan than anyone in the NBA at that time…you gotta take a flier on someone like that, especially when you play a zone defense…wishing sean the best.
