Syracuse Crew #8 In The Country
I dont know if anyone has noticed, but the SU Mens Rowing team has quietly gotten back to its rightful place as one of the best rowing programs in the country the past 4 years. Right now, SU just moved up to 8th in the D1 Coaches Poll and looks in good standing to get a bid for the National Championships which are being held in Sacramento this year. The Poll can be found here... USRowing D1 Coaches Poll
SYRACUSE, N.Y. n– The Syracuse men’s rowing team jumped two spots to No. 8 in the most recent US Rowing Men’s Varsity Eight Collegiate Coaches Poll. The Orange was previously ranked 10th after its strong showing in the San Diego Classic and was ranked 13th in the preseason poll.
The Orange men have been ranked in the top 13 during the last three seasons. At eighth, SU is ranked the highest since the team peaked at No. 8 on May 9, 2007.
Syracuse has been very successful under head coach Dave Reishman, but more importantly consistent. After the 2007 class, there were 7 open spots in the Varsity 8. The next year, with an entirely different crew, SU stayed ranked right around the top 10 and finished the season at 13th. Again with this years team there are 5 new rowers in the V8, some of them with Jr National Team experience, all of them very motivated... So we can expect big things from this group over the next few years.
While Rowing is only second to our mens lacrosse team in terms of number of national championships, it has not won one since 1978. SU has produced several national team members and Olympians. More information on the program may be found at the alumni website.... www.saracrew.org
This weekend the Mens Rowing Team head off the Worchester Mass for the Eastern Sprints. This is both a battle of old eastern powers and a qualifier for the national championships. The heats are in the morning which determine which final the SU boats will be placed in. In SU's morning heat they have top seed and defending national champion Wisconsin, and Boston University, a crew stacked with international oarsmen. The schedule can be found at row2k.com Its a pretty cool event and worth checking out if youre in the area.
GO ORANGE!!!

Ive thought this too. There are some good reasons though. Empachers, these awesome German boats that have won more Olympic Golds than Michael Phelps cursed with immortality, only come in Yellow (its their trademark thing) … unless youre the German National Team, in which case they make special pink ones (i kid you not)
As for all the North American companies, Hudson and Vespoli, painting the boat beyond the standard black/white/navy jacks up the price… prob in the 1,500 range which seems silly for part of the boat thats under water. These colors also make it harder to resell the boat down the road to a HS crew when its time to make room. Many have a tendency to fade in the sun as well.
One thing we did look into was anodizing the riggers orange. However we were told that would fade to pink very quickly.
So… SU ends up with white or blue boats.
The barn burner I spoke to
did not disappoint. Though cuse ended up on the short end of it, being .3 off the defending national champion and consensus #1 team in the country is not a bad position heading to the National Championships which SU qualified for yesterday.

Thats time elapsed photography where they splice together a series of thin photos at the finish line in sequence.
