Syracuniforms

So I've become a regular reader of Uniwatch, and we made an appearance in one of the linked articles today. We showed up at number 4 on this list of worst basketball jerseys ever.

It seems like our uniforms get a lot of negative reactions from both Syracuse fans and outsiders.  In a way we have become the Oregon of the East, letting Nike have free range to tinker with new designs.  We may have avoided the diamond-plate shoulder pads, but we have let them change the team name.  We were also among the first to wear the "System of Dress" basketball uniforms.

So I was just wondering, am I the only one who likes our uniforms?  Sure, they're different, but I don't want to look like everyone else.  From the "ORANGE" on the home jerseys to the blocks down the side to (gasp) the silver numbers, I think they're pretty good looking.  They're very modern, which I understand can upset longtime fans who grew up with a different look, but times change.

I get the sense that a lot of people outside SU are simply against the color orange in general.  Personally, I'm just glad I didn't go to a school whose primary color is grey.

So what do you think?

for some reason the all neon orange works for me for basketball

(hate the duct tape though) but looks horrible when it’s our football team wearing all orange. So swap the basketball team with the all orange football team at #4 and I concur.

Speaking of uniforms, saw a picture of the back of the new Lax jerseys today and it’s even worse than the already bad front. They should have left them alone.

Yeah, the football team in all orange was a mistake. My only complaint with the current football uniforms is the S on the side of the helmet. For some reason it looks out of place. We need to go back to either numbers on the side or nothing.

Go, fight, and win.

All Orange

The all Orange is easily one of the worst unis in the history of the school. What were they thinking? the lighting in the Dome is already flat enough; but combined with that shade of Orange; everyone looked completely washed out and the colors just looked……drab. At least those McNabb-era unis were sharply colored; the bold blue, the brighter, more bold Orange, etc. – so they really contrasted well to the more flat levels of light in the Dome.

I agree that the block “S” is also bad. That has no place on the uniforms; but I’m also partial to the McNabb-era (ie simple) helmet designs anyway. Even if maybe that “S” was a little smaller? Or less block-y?

Amen

To everything you just said.

Don't hate the Orange basketball unis...

…but that duct tape-looking thing on the back of the shoulders is beyond dumb. I mean, seriously, what the hell is the purpose of that?

by OrangeNYC on Feb 25, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

Duh, it's reflective paneling

so that they can be seen while jogging at night!

DUHH!!

Obviously kidding, I have no freakin’ clue why that accent is in there.

Those shoulder things

are just part of the System of Dress jerseys. Other teams (such as LSU, whose shoulder panels are purple) seem to use colors on this accent that go with their school colors; we instead use duct tape.

I agree to a point,

with some of your points. I do not hate the uniforms like many other including my best friend roomate and long time Cuse supporter who advocates going back to the early 90’s with the cursive cuse across the chest. I like the shorts alot, but think the blocks should be carried up the sides of the tops as well. I like how it says ORANGE on our home jerseys alot. I do however think the silver reflective numbers need to go. I get why Nike does it because they want to always show off their hot new fabrics and crap but no where in Syracuse history has silver every been incorporated so it makes no sense to me. Those numbers should be navy blue on the away uniforms and maybe orange with blue trim on the home unis. Like I said I don’t hate them but think they should be tweaked a bit.

I don't like the silver.

I like what lax did last year, with the all orange jersey/shorts and pure white lettering (which, of course, Nike changed AGAIN this year…sigh). But I really hate the silver on the basketball uniforms. Blue is our accent color, not dumbass duct tape silver.

As for football, last year was the best of the post-Pasqualoni era, by far. But I can do without the block S on the helmets. I’d like ‘em plain, like they were during the 80’s and 90s. Those uniforms were sweet looking.

But the ugliest uniform of all time were the all-Orange uniforms we wore for the home football opener in 2007 against Washington. Ugliest fucking uniforms in the history of team sports. I hope they NEVER wear that again. They made me want to gouge my eyes out in disgust.

With the exception of Virginia Tech, every other orange school uses blue as an accent color. It’s been done.

I’ve actually always liked grey and orange together. My room in my old house was grey with orange accents.

Go, fight, and win.

agreed.

silver is bad. shouldn’t ever be used. but as bad as i think the bball jersey is. as embarrassing as the bball shorts are. and as much as i’d like to forget the all-orange football look. the lacrosse jerseys this year are the worst jersey worn at any level of play in the state of NY at any time this decade.

Well it makes sense, from an artistic standpoint.

Blue and Orange are opposed on the color wheel, so the contrast is naturally bold and stunning. I like the orange/gray combo myself. I have a pair of dark gray sneakers with orange trim, and a gray North Face jacket with orange accents. But I guess it’s just a matter of personal taste, because even though I like the combination in general, I really hate it on our uniforms.

I like orange/grey too

But the orange/silver I think is a little much. That’s the biggest flaw of the basketball unis in my opinion. Otherwise I like ’em.

All orange basketball uniforms = pretty awesome
All orange football unis = not so much

by TheSaltineWarrior on Feb 24, 2009 11:59 PM EST reply actions

I like the basketball unis actually.

Football is a whole other story. They weren’t bad last year, but still not great. And all orange football needs to never happen again. And lax this year….wtf? Why did they make such ridiculous changes? Last years were fine I thought. As were the uniforms we wore during the 2004 champ season. Now they are getting beyond ridiculous. Nike has serious ADD.

i'd like to drop nike

and add under armor. i know it will never happen (especially with boeheim here) but under armor makes really nice jerseys (louisville). nike hasn’t made a nice su jersey since 2003.

Why does Jimmy B have an affinity to Nike?

Just because that’s the way it’s always been?

by voteprime on Feb 25, 2009 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

louisville jerseys

louisville jerseys are made by adidas. not under armor. maryland’s jerseys are made by under armor tho

by DLaDuke15 on Mar 2, 2009 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

Under Armour is from Baltimore

And College Park is kind of a hybrid Baltimore/Washington DC area school, so that connection makes sense and is actually kind of cool and local, even if Under Armour has become big and national. It would be sort of like Starbucks designing the Seahawks uniforms…only with less caffeine…

by voteprime on Mar 4, 2009 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

At least its better than the 2003 All - Orange unis

The geniuses at Nike didn’t even bother to see if the pants and jerseys matched. The result was embarassing.

Bonus points if you remember who that is in the picture.
