Syracuse Football Gets Gulley

The urban dictionary defines gully as "something from the streets, gutter, and/or gangsta." I think we can all agree that describes Doug Marrone to a T.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Garfield High School running back Tyson Gulley has committed to play football at Syracuse. He committed orally (NH).

After a couple weeks where the Orange seemed to be competing for recruits with the likes of major BCS programs, this time it looks like they outbid the usual suspects.  Toledo, Ohio, Akron, Kansas, Ball State, Central Michigan, Kent State, Bowling Green, Miami (OH), Eastern Michigan and Marshall were among his suitors.

The 5'9", 175 LB prospect is rated two-stars by Scout as well as by Rivals.  ESPN rates him as a three-star RB who "has marginal size but is an absolute burner with great burst, play-speed and acceleration."

According to his high school coach, Gulley fits because of his ability to fit in a spread offense.

"I think it is a good fit," Sax said in an e-mail. "Most schools are interested in the type of player he is since most are running the spread. He can run the ball and catch it from the flanker spot. I’m sure they will use him to return punts and kicksoffs as well. He is multi-dimensional and that is what makes him such a great player."

He rushed 167 times for 952 yards and 14 touchdowns. Completed 8-of-18 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Had four receptions for 47 yards and one touchdown. Had 51 tackles, caused one fumble, had four interceptions and blocked a field goal. He also was the City Series Offensive Player of the Year.

As a black guy

I don’t know whether to proud or weird out that you look to find the definition of “gulley or gully” cause I haven’t heard black people say that word in years.

Syracuse University Orange. Born to run(and kick (bleep) since the late 1880s.

as a white guy, I want to let you know that any part of black culture, old or new, will always be cooler than anything we can come up with.

And no matter how long that word has been in use

This old lame white guy had never heard of it before. I am not cool.

This recruit may only be 2 stars

But he fits the mold of speed, speed, speed. Seems like Marrone just wants to put speed all over the field, which is what you do if you want to run the “video game” offense, as he put it. I like it.

Between that and the Paulus DNA

The boys in the Onondaga County crime lab will have their hands full.

So to speak.

I like this.

I’m guessing his size is knocking him down in the eyes of many schools. But if he really is that fast I think he will be used as a change-of-pace back to complement someone like Collier, not a feature guy, so I’m not as concerned about his size as I might be otherwise.

Hopefully he has a growth spurt when he gets here

kid is FAST

Even when it looks like defenders have a good angle on him to make a play, he just blows past them. And he looks like he bounces off tackles pretty well for as small as he is. Wonder if he’ll be used as a RB or maybe converted to play in the secondary. Looks like he’d make an awesome returner.

gullah"

i am more familiar with that term for some of the black people who live on some of the offshore ga islands . i dont really compredez vous anyone here who makes statements about any particular group being cooler then others" . so that makes say, my ancestry..iroquois , siciliano, irish/welsh rigid regimentated stick in the mud types?whatever, on the other site, su.com,they brought up the fact that both wvu and pitt have got these great scat back" players piling up huge yardage this year. SPEED KILLS! can’t teach it. refine it maybe. and make it quicker. sounds like the kid as mentioned, could be a great flanker back in a opton type attack. if he has good hands, a real percy harvin reciever/runner/kick and punt returner. and it seems to me, that teams like oregon, oregon state, ct, even VT seem to be pretty good judges of talent that is not typical 4-5 stars coming out of hs. someone else mentioned he could be another joe morris.. we hope! i would like to see marrone out there recruiting a couple of good fullbacks with quickness.. ala jerome bettis/ the bus"/ND/steelers

I think hes coming in to be more like the Rogers Brothers at Oregon State.

Im sure the pitch is “Look how we used Reggie Bush in New Orleans. Thats the roll I want you to play – home run hitter. Do you want to be Reggie Bush?”

YOU’RE NOT AS GOOD AS REGGIE BUSH IF THE ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT DOESN’T NEED TO GIVE YOUR FAMILY GIFTS TO COMMIT REMEMBER THAT
