Despite losing its top three players, Syracuse is better - 12.21.09 - SI Vault
Clearly, losing the top three scorers (guards Jonny Flynn and Eric Devendorf and forward Paul Harris, who all left early for the pros) from last year's 28--10 squad has not been the calamity many predicted. Indeed, their replacements have made Syracuse a bigger and better team. "We were a good offensive team last year," says coach Jim Boeheim, "but we couldn't stop the good teams."

Devo / P Harris

I’ve been discussing this with my Dad lately – it’s becoming CRYSTAL CLEAR why Devendorf and P Harris left:

There are really two elements at play here:

(1) when Flynn left, they knew that because he was such a phenomenal playmaker and distributor they feared for their own stats and level of play would definitely decrease.

(2) because they practiced against these guys every day, they saw the writing on the all. In other words, Devendorf knew that Rautins had fully come back form his injuries and would get the overwhelming majority of burn AND Paul Harris must have known that Wesley Johnson was basically going to take ALL of his minutes. Combine that with Harris’ unique relationship w/ Boeheim and you knew they were goners.

You might be on to something there.

They knew before any of us that WesJo was the real deal.

I agree completely about Harris

I think he saw the writing on the wall with Wes Johnson in practice.

In Devo’s case, I honestly believe that the “woman beater” moniker that he picked up (whether or not it was justified) was enough for him to want to get the heck out of Dodge and make a fresh start, especially since he had already finished his degree.

Wasn't there a story on here about him taking time to finish up his degree now?

Or was that Harris now that he’s injured? Because the word was that Devo had graduated already so I was confused.
