Jon Wilner Finally Redeems Himself

Photo

You might remember the San Jose Mercury News' Jon Wilner as the guy who left SU out of his Top 25 last year after the Orange defeated Memphis...but still kept Memphis in there.  Wilner claimed it was all just a typo and promised to keep a closer eye on the Orange moving forward.

Looks like he kept to his word as Cuse Country discovered.  Wilner is the mystery 2nd AP voter who gave SU a first-place vote today. Wilner joins Dick Weiss in the very elite Smartest People in College Basketball club.

In the latest poll, Texas and Kentucky also receive a first-place vote while Kansas racks up 61 of them.  Purdue, somehow, remains No. 4, ahead of the Orange.

Somehow?

Purdue is the only top 10 team with a quality road win. They proved just as much as Cuse did last week.

No you're right

beating a SEC team that is projected to finish 9th in the conference is a quality road win. Nice come back in that game though.

Interesting comment...

Since Syracuse was projected what, 6th or so, in the Big East? You’d think people here would realize more than anybody how little preseason projections mean. Alabama has played like a bubble team so far.

Anyways, good thing rankings in this sport are meaningless, or I might have to stab myself.

More importantly

in that link, we are ranked #1 by Yahoo users

Please...

Us worthless peons without a journalism degree are not qualified to make decisions like that !!! Best leave it to the professionals to tell us who the best teams are. I mean thats why they get paid the big bucks, right?

by Rocket Ship Science on Dec 14, 2009 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

…Yeah, let’s do it by popular vote. Then it will be a popularity contest.

Purdue:

yeah somehow purdue is #4! purdue has beaten ONE ranked team, tennessee, by ONE point. syracuse has beaten 3 top 12 teams. THREE. and we haven’t won any game by less than 12 pts. so i can definitely see why purdue is ranked ahead of us!!

LETS GO ORANGE!!

The problem is

that the media did not take into account that Cal and UNC had players missing and that Florida had a bowel movement mid-game. That is why Syracuse has won all these games in convincing fashion. Silly media.

I’ve lost all respect for Greg Anthony. First, he makes a ton of arguments for Kentucky to be a #1 seed. These are the main points:
1. Kentucky beat North Carolina and that was a “big win”.
Yeah it was. Big 2-point win. Incidentally, Syracuse beat the same team by 16 on a neutral court.
2. Kentucky beat UConn at MSG.
Yup. Incidentally, Syracuse beat a higher-ranked Florida team in Florida.
3. John Wall.
Yup. Incidentally, Syracuse has Wes Johnson and has still had 6 different players lead the team in scoring.

Given all these similarities (what I see as advantages to Syracuse), and the fact that Kentucky is a number one seed in Anthony’s eyes, you would think Syracuse would also be a number one seed?

No. That’s fine. After all, Anthony said there were really 6 or 7 number one seeds. Does he even mention Syracuse among these teams?

NO! What? He mentions West Virginia and Purdue, but no Syracuse. The man is a moron. That’s fine though. I hope SU has more doubters. I’d love to see SU get a shot at Kentucky and Johnson swat some John Wall trash shot into the stands.

yo watch that video again

Wow...

that is kind of a big mistake, given the premise of the post.

Tune in next week for…

Why Tiger Woods should divorce his wife for treating him so poorly on Thanksgiving…

Why Alabama should be playing for a national title, not relegated to some unnamed bowl taking place after New Years Day…

Why can’t I find a schedule for Hartford Whalers home games…

I'm so out of it when it comes to the NHL

that, given the context of your post, I had to guess that the Whalers were no longer an NHL team. But I didn’t actually know that. Holy fuck, it’s been over 10 years. I actually should be too embarrassed to post this. And yet, here I am clicking “post.”

Don't get your panties in a bunch

We’ll be at worst a 2 seed if things play out the way that they should. There’s not a ton of difference btwn 1s and 2s

by brendoh on Dec 14, 2009 4:35 PM EST via mobile reply actions

What year did we lose to Richmond as a 2 seed?

Though I suppose it could have been worse to be the first #1 seed to list to a #16…

by voteprime on Dec 14, 2009 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

Odds are

we will take a couple losses in the BE. Its just too tough a league not to. Other teams have one or two good teams in their league. We have 8-10. But if we are highly ranked going into the conf tourney, then win it, we should get a number 1 as the BE champ.

Enjoy the ride

We’re still more than two weeks from the Big East schedule STARTING. No need to sweat our seed in the BET or the NCAAs now. Enjoy the ride, have a few laughs, hopefully not many cries, some celebratory cocktails, and we can worry about seeding in three months. This is a fun club to watch play…. it’s gonna be good times.

Besides, Greg Anthony is an idiot.

One of the key contests in Syracuse's march to the national championship in 1959 was a titanic clash with unbeaten Penn State on Nov. 7, 1959 in University Park, PA. The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 7 and the Orangemen No. 4.

The 20-18 victory propelled Syracuse to the No. 1 in both the AP and UPI polls which they held for the remainder of the season to claim the consensus National Championship. This is the Universal Newsreel account of that contest.
