Dick Weiss Was Right: Syracuse 85, Florida 73

Dick "Hoops" Weiss was voted Syracuse the No. 1 team in the country for three week's running.  Me thinks he might be on to something.  The Orange withstood a three-point rally from the Gators and put forth an effort that reaffirmed everything we were hoping as No. 7 Syracuse beat No. 10 Florida 85-73. (boxscore)

Rick Jackson recorded 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Wesley Johnson added 17 and 10, as No. 7 Syracuse handled the 10th-ranked Florida Gators, 85-73, at St. Pete Times Forum.

Neither team was ranked entering the season but both were unbeaten coming into the game. Only Syracuse (9-0) left with a perfect mark, though, thanks to a 52.5 percent shooting effort and a 43-31 rebounding advantage.

Andy Rautins scored 16 points, while Kris Joseph chipped in 12 points and 10 boards for the Orange, who have won every game this season by double digits.

First of all, it's been a while since we've been able to root for a truly dominant team in football or basketball.  It feels...strange.  In a good way, mind you.  But, now that we know for sure that the Orange truly can win every single game they play, it's a very different feeling.

Second, Florida has terrible fans.  Here's what's going to happen...people who watched the game last night are going to say Syracuse didn't really have to play in front of a hostile crowd because there were so many SU fans there.  You know why so many SU fans stood out last night?  Cause there's was no one else there!  Upper deck?  Empty.  Mezzanine?  Spotty.  If not for Syracuse fans traveling 3,000 miles that place would have been a graveyard.  Florida fans apparantly couldn't make the two hour drive to watch their top-ten team play another top-ten team.  It's not SU's fault it has good fans, so I don't want to hear it...got it, Katz?

Third, and here's the part that should scare the rest of the country...Wes Johnson had a so-so game  The anointed savior and cult leader who has been destined since birth to lead us to glory had an everyman kind of evening.  And we still beat the No. 10 team in the nation by double-digits.  Yeah he scored 17 and grabbed 10 boards but he really didn't get rolling until the 2nd half.  Florida had many an opportunity to run away from Cuse and couldn't do it.  Yikes to everyone.

Fourth...Rick Jackson, ladies and gentlemen.  21 points and 11 rebounds.  Welcome to the bigtime, Rickles.  And for SU fans, we can add Rick to the list of players more than happy to step up and be a leader for us when needed.

Fifth, speaking of leaders...Andy Rautins!  The cajones on Andy when he hit the three in the 2nd half to kill Florida's rally.  He immediately turned to his teammates, started up a "let's do this" mantra and did what we've come to expect of him.

Seventh, want to know what the "official" rotation is going to look like? Now you do.  Boeheim played seven guys (Jackson, Onuaku, Johnson, Rautins, Triche, Scoop & Joseph).  That's it.  Mookie, deal with it or do not.

Eighth, Chandler Parsons looks like an anime character.

Ninth, "I think, just on what I’ve seen of Syracuse, they are capable of winning the national championship.  I think Bobby Knight made a comment (Wednesday) night that he thought they were the best team in the country. I haven’t seen everybody play so I can’t comment on that. But I would be hard-pressed to say there were three or four teams better than them. They can beat you in a lot of ways." - Billy Donovan

The Orange improve to 9-0, should grab a couple more first-place votes and could move up a spot or two in the next rankings.  It's official, everyone.  The realz, we haz them.  Until someone shows me otherwise, we're the best team in the nation as far as I'm concerned.  Hells yeah I'm biased...but I'm pretty sure Dick Weiss and I are right.

It’s also not Syracuse’s fault Florida seems to not care about their basketball team. EDSBS, which is my favorite Florida blog out there, openly admitted its hatred of basketball and of the Florida basketball team…..the day it won its second NC in a row.

That seems to be the case.

It looks like SBNation doesn’t have much of a Florida presence and the one blog only gives a quick preview of the game against Syracuse, not even really seeming to care. I guess the fans are too busy getting the Alabama drubbing to care about basketball…?

Related, from that preview:

There will be a big crowd tonight as Tampa is Gainesville South and everyone is ready to climb back on the basketball bandwagon. A win tonight will definitely turn up the hype meter for UF.
A little off on that prediction. What was the announced attendance – something like 9,500?

Totally agree with your third point (Wes having a so-so game), and I think it can be extended even further. Aside from Rick Jackson, it seemed like a mediocre performance from the entire team. Yet we controlled the entire game. Part of that can be credited to the Florida defense, but if we can soundly beat the #11 team in the country on a bad night, then the sky’s the limit for these guys.

I’m excited.

Go, fight, and win.

Thank you

Way to rep the Big East, Orange. As a UofL fan, I’ve already had to endure the insufferable UK talk that “The SEC is now better than the Big East.” Hopefully last night puts a damper on that. Although they’ve never known to be a rational bunch…

From my experience in the 1st row!!!

That was awesome…

My general admission got me 1st row!!! Entire game I was 1st row behind the basket on Syracuse’s side. I was the only fan there with my arm outstretched at the beginning of the game and AO was the only one that left me hanging. You can even see me in the highlights when Rautins and Wes make their threes I’m jumping up and down.

I made Kenny Boynton miss a free throw since it was extremely quiet and I was screaming at him, enough to lose my voice. They only took like 4 FT’s I think in the 1st half though, so I didn’t do too much.

The atmosphere was awesome. At least 50/50 Cuse fans, and at the end it was nuts. Florida’s busloads exited with like a minute left, and after that it was just Syracuse chaos. There were Cuse fans everywhere. Outside you could hear chants and not a Gator was in sight. Edit: I saw one that was like a Gator fan group leader who had a “House of Horrors” sign. As he was walking on the bus I yelled out “This is the house of pain!!”. I forget what the sign said though at the time. :) You couldn’t hear chants during the game because the band played at every timeout and would drown out any chant.

I met some Mississippi State fans who were very nice. They enjoyed their win and were able to shake hands with their coach. They were most impressed with Syracuse’s size and Rick Jackson(who wasn’t?).

All in all a great night(except for FT shooting). Enjoy this win and the many more to come, I certainly am.

PS- I don’t know if anyone else was there, but there was a “21 shit himself” chant going on in our section. Werner had a definite “brown stain” on the back of his shorts.

Irving Walker heard it after that Joseph airball! I made sure of that  He actually air balled twice. Boynton and Parsons were on fire though. They really chucked away from “the parking lot” although it was impossible for me to see how far back they were until I saw highlights.

I’m forced to give Werner the benefit of the doubt, but if you go to the 2 hour mark on 360 and watch for about a minute and look for it, there is a shot of his rear end(no homo) and you can see a stain. Either way, it was just hilarious there was a group of loud, male SU fans that were all screaming it. The Florida fans were all laughing too.

Oh yea, Rony Seikaly was also in attendance. He was maybe in the 3rd row behind the Syracuse bench. Someone pointed it out to me, and it was unmistakably him. Tan, black hair, tall with a blue hoodie and a S on the front of it.

Jim Boeheim also had a rowdy group of fans chanting his name after he was going into the locker room after the win. He had to have been proud of the support. From his vantage point, there was many 200 fans all in that area getting held back by security(they were anal about stepping off the bleacher part), plus Syracuse banners and flags all being waved around. We looked like an army.

When I lived in Florida in 2006 I spent time in Jax and Naples

Believe me, there’s a solid Cuse Collective down there. Some retirees, but mostly just folks from the NE who moved down for work over the last 20 years.

I went to a sports bar/restaurant on Jax beach named “Sneakers” for every game in the G-Mac tourney, and even with the SEC and ACC tourney’s on concurrently, far more Cuse out than anyone else.

The 'Cuse is in tha house, oh my God oh my God.

Axeman

Brent Axe had a tweet last night to the effect of, “this is a Final Four team” – just……wow…..I guess I hadn’t thought about it that way. But that’s a big deal.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless
