I like Caron Butler

There, I said it. I like Caron Butler.

I live in the Washington, DC area and I'm trying to root for the Wizards. As a result, it's been impossible not to grow to love Caron Butler. He's a great player, he has a lot of personality, he understands the importance of a quality wide straw (no homo). Basically, he's an important part of this current Wizards team and if I'm going to be a fan, I have to like him.

But he's a UConn Husky. I hated him when he was at UConn. I hated him when he came to the NBA. It wasn't even really until last night that he was introduced in the starting line-up and I found myself cheering that I realized I actually like him.

I feel like I'm cheating. Like I've done something terribly wrong. Is there some way to repent for my sins? Can I say a certain number of Hail Ottos and have my sole cleansed?

Oh God, what's wrong with me? Why is my mind betraying me like this?!

You won't feel that way

After you take a long sole searching walk around town listening to ‘Dust in the Wind’.

Following professional sports makes it impossible to hold all your grudges.

If a college rival joins a professional team you are a fan of, you are allowed to like that player. However, if a college rival is on another team, you must hate that team even more than before.

This rule challenged me this year as a staunch Michael Vick hater (even before the dog stuff) and him joining the Eagles. I still hate him but try to pretend he’s not there.

Oh my goodness.

The thought never occurred to me to have to root against Donovan McNabb. Wow. How do you do it and look at yourself in the mirror every Monday (and occasional Tuesdays after MNF games)?

I know

I kind of secretly root for McNabb but still hope the Eagles lose….

Fortunately...

… the Packers and Chargers don’t play the Eagles very often. Though the Chargers play the Colts every year, or it seems like, and cheering against Freeney is almost as bad as cheering against McNabb.

Once a husky always a husky.

This made me vomit on my keyboard. Picture your wife/gf/mother/sister/some woman in your life with Jim Calhoun rubbing his hands all over her. Not attractive. Caron has Jim Calhoun all over him.

You did the right thing though in talking about it. You need help.

I would recommend switching to another team. Nuggets perhaps? You should only cheer for the wizards when Butler is on the bench and watch highlights of his uconn days before games so youre in the right mental state going into it. We can get through this.

Ive been where you are. Ray Allen was starting to grow on me. How bad can he be? You cant hate someone just for their college can you? Then he and his cousin solicited a single mother stripper I went to HS with, cursed her out when she turned them down and I was reminded: Once a husky always a husky.

This might be the worst possible mental picture one can have in their head.

i had the same issue with Ben Gordon

But now that he’s off the Bulls, I’m glad, so…HE CAN GO TO HELL with all the other Huskies, including Jesus Shuttlesworth.

The worst of these scenarios

was being a Knicks fan when they got Ewing. I was a child just forming my sports allegiances, I didn’t have much nuance in my rooting interests but I had definitely learned that “New York = Good” and “Georgetown = Evil”. Then there was an epic collision of loyalties. Then the Nets drafted Derrick Coleman five years later and were able to steal my affections for a while.
