The Long ride is over

Well, the show's over. The 2009 Syracuse Orange Football season is now over. It has been very interesting to say the least. We had our lows(see the 5 interception game and "Halloween")and our highs (See Northwestern and the "Senior Game")I personally think it has been a success. We should have not though that a team with a short roster would have a least made a bowl game, let alone win the big east. So finish this statement...The 2009 Season was a.....?

... good building block.

The fans need to ignore the bandwagoners and the talking heads… just look at the big picture.

4-8 is as good as we have managed since 2004. But no so good that anyone should expect a 9 win season next year. We have room to improve.

Goal for 2010: 6 wins. Nassib has a long way to go yet.

Yeah

That’s why I didn’t say “better than we have managed since 2004.” The choice of words was not accidental…

Progressive Success.

-Delone was fantastic the last 6 games.
-Lemon had a coming out party today
-Our O-Line has been progressively getting better throughout the year
-The Offense has been able to sustain long scoring drives with minimal turnovers by the end of the year
-Our Defense was WAYYYY better than advertised, and even while missing key players was very very good.
-We are going to be very experienced at almost every position next year, even two-deep in some areas.

I expect a bowl next year.

...step away from GRob

and a huge step towards getting back to the MacPherson level. I wouldn’t say this season was a big success, but overall I’d probably give a grade of B- to B. In most areas I’d say we met expectations and in some areas I think we exceeded expectations.

All in all, just getting bodies in here that can hold down a position in case of injuries will do this team the most good. From my perspective without looking at the schedule for next year I think 7 wins could be the goal. That would get us back to a bowl game and would set us up for a potential run at the conference in 2011.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

...reason to believe

all things considered, this was a good season. There is no question that the tide has turned and that the program is moving in the right direction. Sure there will be dipshits who continue to question this team and won’t commit until they are playing in a bowl game, but they are also going to discover that they’re missing out on some pretty good football games.

If you told me last year that 20+ players would quit the team, including some starters from last year’s squad, that MW would quit the team half-way through, that 10 more starters would not finish the season due to injury (include Suter and A. Jones), and that we’d be relying heavily on freshmen and players that were playing new positions…I’d probably roll my eyes, put forehand-to-forehead, and find a hobby for Saturday afternoons.

Instead, this team has managed to stay competitive in most of it’s games (WVU being the outlier, followed by the 2nd halves of USF and Pitt) and that in itself is huge. Tack on some great wins against Nortwestern and Rutgers, and I may have to bust out the “T” word. That is a huge testament to the remaining players and their desire to practice and commit themselves, and a huge nod to the coaching staff for preparation and game-planning and putting the players in the best position to win.

In some strange way, though, there is almost a sense of relief. I would be completely ecstatic to be planning for a bowl right now, but it is also kind of nice to know that we are building (quickly) to something much, much bigger and gives us something to improve upon next year…and something that we can realistically achieve. I would almost be afraid of the huge expectations for next year if this team were to have over-achieved this season. Four wins is very respectable and a great foundation.

My greatest hope for next year is that we either: a) play fewer 12:00pm games or b) start winning them. Perhaps the administration will allow the team to practice at 12:00pm everyday , instead of the afternoon or in the evening. SU played 8 noon games this year (2 more than any other Big East team), and we lost all of them. On the other hand, our 4 wins were all afternoon or evening games.

Clearly, this team needs “Noon’s Magicians”….

thanks, I’ve been saving it since just before Minnesota game…I wasn’t sure if it should be “Noon Magicians” or “Noon’s Magicians”, and I was afraid I wouldn’t get to use it until after a Saturday afternoon basketball game…

In his first year, with defections and a depleted roster, Douggernuts matched GRob’s ‘best’ year, so let that sink in. They were a couple of plays away from bowl contention. I like where the program is headed and looking forward to next season. Maybe I’ll even venture back to Cuse to catch a game.

by chicagocuse on Nov 29, 2009 1:13 AM EST reply actions

They were a couple of plays away from bowl contention.

Indeed. We went into OT against Minnesota. If we had somehow won that game, we end up playing for for the international bowl against UConn today. Crappy bowl or not, we could barely dream about that over the last 4 years. Without analyzing anything else on this team, that leaves me excited for next year and everything that comes after that.

by voteprime on Nov 29, 2009 1:36 AM EST up reply actions

just another season marred in failures.............

While the coaching search was still happening I took shit for saying we could go 6-6 with the right coach, and that Marrone was not the right coach. And I’m sure I’ll take greif on this post too, however after re-examining the season, Marrone cost the team a Bowl invite(all be it to the lowest level bowl out there). He cost us the Luoisville game, plain and simple. It was in fact his hyppocrytical casino rule that drove out Mike Williams(while their advertising banners adorn the dome)
You cant drive off half your team and expect to be a decent football team, check it out in the history of college football. No incoming coach has had more players leave a team than he had leave. His unwillingness to build towards next year, once we had been eliminated from bowl contention was dissapointing. His total lack of common sense, to at least reward the guys like Dantley and Robinson by feild time once we were down by 3 scores in the last game of the year, if for nothing else a reward for sticking with his program and eccepting their new roles. Even though those roles left them standing on the sideline all year long, was dissapointing to say the least.
Doug Marrone is not the Orange holy grail, as he has made out to be. He is has also proven he is not a bad coach, just an inexpirienced head coach. Lets just hope he learned from all his mistakes this year as Robinson didn’t seem to do.
The team i give an A-, great effort all year long, just didn’t get the results at times. Coaching gets a C- was going to say a D, but they were able to keep the team playing hard( the one bright spot)

Oh please.

Look. I know you hate HCDM. But lets be realistic here.

1. 6-6 would’ve been outstanding for this team. They didn’t have the talent for 6-6.
2. No, it’s not hypocritical. Not at all. Besides the fact that HCDM and the team have nothing to do with the presence of those advertising banners, he has the right to set rules for his team. And that’s certainly not a bad rule.
3. I’m glad he drove off half the team. It was those kinds of players who didn’t give a shit, the kinds that GRob recruited, that were a huge cause of the vortex of suck that has been this team the last few seasons.
4. Why should he “reward” anyone? Not his job as a coach.

I realize you’ve hated HCDM since the beginning, so you’re not exactly an unbiased source. But try to look at reality for once.

by wildcatlh on Nov 29, 2009 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

youre crazy...........

There is a huge difference between hating someone and thinking they were not the best for a particular job.
1. 6-6 was realistic before the season and after wacthing every minute of every game it was right on point a couple plays away from 6-6
2.yes it is
3.as a coach, it is your job to work with the talent you have inheritted
4.also as a coach your reward your players who work hard with playing time(especially when the playing time is meaningless and you would otherwise be playing your first year senior qb)

by 86trash on Nov 30, 2009 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

This isn't basketball

Where you put your walkons in at the end of a game. Marrone is trying to instill a culture of not wasting any down. If the coach then wastes a down, that defeats the purpose.

Did you just want Dantley to take a knee? Wow… thanks coach. Did you want him to play? Why… so he could get killed on a live play?

Seriously… the best thing about Marrone is that we are playing for “real” now. We are firing coaches. We are benching players that need to be benched. If fans want 2-10 and positive comments… G-Rob is always there, somewhere in the world, for a hug or a bedtime story.

by ezcuse on Nov 30, 2009 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

6-6 would have taken an act of God, not a better coach. Everyone healthy, guys who had been floundering coming out of no where to be all americans and some major upsets. We nearly got it.

As for Mike Williams and defections, its his first year so he gets a pass. That being said, I like that he didnt write off the year. He kept the guys motivated after being eliminated from bowl contention. He set a good precedent for not taking any shit and not giving special treatment to star players with a guy who was gone after the season anyway.

I think he handled the QB situation perfectly. He showed loyalty to the guy he brought in (which is big for recruits as they want to see a coach who has enough confidence in his guys to not give up on them after bad games) while getting Nassib reps. He also showed an ability to tailor an offense to the players he has and play to their strengths. That is really big in coaching and something even Jimmy B has been criticized for not doing.

All and all, factoring in that we have a better record this year, showed significant on (and off) field improvement and have been locking up high ceiling guys (because lets face it, su is not getting the 5star sure things) for next year… Im giving the team an A for the year. They could have easily mailed it in, but with leaders like Art Jones, Greg P and ARob setting the tone for future teams, we are going to be all right.

by ryanwk628 on Nov 29, 2009 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

your first lines.............

completely overdramatic and a bit wrong…………our defensive front we knew would be good …………we knew our wr crew would be much improved just by adding mike williams(who could have finished as an all-american possibly)………….and we knew our rb’s were pretty darn good

minnesota is rarely good in the big ten i thought we would have beaten them going into the season……………….should have beat louisville which i thought we would…………and i wasn’t sure about uconn or rutgers but thought we would be 1 big play away from nipping one of them
To further explain my thoughts, Marrone came in with a chip on his shoulder because he is a Syracuse guy. Right fom the get go he had something to prove, you can transition a program without running half the team off. That is not putting your players in the best position to win. Part of coaching is teaching, the other part is learning.
As I stated before i just hope he learns from his mistakes, if he does he may turn out to be a good head coach, if he doesnt lets just call it greggers part duex

by 86trash on Nov 30, 2009 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

Wow...

everyone has an opinion… but why would our WRs be good? The quitter was added, but nobody else was close to being a reliable #2. Even now… Lemon had one good game, and that included a terrible drop and a fumble. And Williams had his share of drops. Meanwhile, MW could have blown out a knee game 1. There goes that.

Minnesota is rarely good in the big 10? What does history mean? They won a bunch of games last year. The only piss poor team is Indiana…and even they are a decent team, losing a few close games.

How did Marrone have a chip on his shoulder? There is no reason for anyone to quit…ever. If you are far down the depth charts… work your butt off and move up the depth chart? Maybe they weren’t run off… but perceived a request to work harder as something beyond their interest or ability.

Duex? Really? He already did something that G-Rob never did… and that was beat a team with 8 wins. And we did that twice.

If anyone watched 2008 and 2009 and didn’t see the difference… geez… I just don’t know.

by ezcuse on Nov 30, 2009 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

Frankly

Anyone who looks at the schedule and thinks “win… win… lose… lose…win” really misses the point of college football.

Virginia lost to a 1-AA team. Duke lost to a 1-AA team. Michigan lost to a 1-AA team. IOWA almost lost to a 1-AA team this year and also almost went to the Rose Bowl.

Meanwhile, Michigan lost to a Mac team last year. Michigan St. lost to one this year. And so on.

At the same time, we have the same hope to beat every opponent going in. With the exception of WVU and Pitt, we had game plans to keep us in every game until somewhere in the 4th quarter. And Pitt didn’t really implode until the 3rd quarter.

The most important thing is that Marrone coached this team above its talent level. That’s how it has to be for the time being. If/when we get enough bodies to have the balls to stick around, then we’ll have better special teams too.

by ezcuse on Nov 30, 2009 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

WRs are no good without a QB, which we did not have coming in. RBs are no good without an OLine which we did not have coming in.

Our DL was like our WRs… Art Jones and who? No secondary, No LBs… we were hurting.

Slowest, smallest, weakest SU team since they started keeping track.

by ryanwk628 on Nov 30, 2009 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

Everyone is entitled to their opinions

Marrone didn’t cost this team a bowl invite. If we beat Louisville, I doubt that Rutgers is looking past us as much as they were. While we played our arses off against Rutgers, they were also very flat. After all, we couldn’t even beat Louisville. In theory, of course.

And where is our 6th win even if we do beat Louisville and Rutgers? Which other game was a winner? Minnesota? Yeah, they fell flat as the season wore on, but also because they lost their best player… who made amazing catches just to keep Minnesota in that game. And how did Marrone cost us that game anyway???

Who was driven off the team? If someone quits, they quit. Do you lie to people regarding their role to keep them around? Do you give them playing time over a superior player just to keep them around? That is the stupid stuff that erodes a program.

And I really don’t get the Dantley thing. You really wanted him to play that last snap? Meanwhile, Robinson’s arm is in a cast… what exactly did you want him to do? AND he got to play. The thing is that Dantley and Robinson have character… they don’t need gratuitous PT to have self worth. They both had their opportunities and won a collective—what—8 games over three seasons?

Just not sure people get the team concept here. For the next few years, Syracuse has to play better than their ability. This year was a case of that. We won as many BCS games with Mike Williams as we did without. Mike Williams dropped a key pass in the Penn State game. Nobody is SO good that they need special rules. In contrast, a team operating as one unit can be greater than their individual parts. This we saw this year.

by ezcuse on Nov 29, 2009 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

Also

I would not make bowl plans next year. I think 7 games next year is going to be very tough. Our schedule is not easy.

Coach P in the 1990’s had 5 easy wins… Temple, Pitt (look up how bad they were in the 1990s), Rutgers, and 2 of the 4 OOC games. That’s 5-2 right there. The season all came down to what happened between WVU, BC, and Va Tech. Win those… 8-3. Lose 1, 7-4. Lose 2, 6-5. [In the McNabb era, Miami’s probation allowed them to be beatable too.]

Our schedule is much different as we are the Rutgers of the league now. And there is no Temple. And now Pitt is good. We stupidly play 3 BCS OOC games every year despite that.

by ezcuse on Nov 29, 2009 9:17 PM EST reply actions

we need 6 wins...

and that should be manageable with Maine at home, Louisville and UConn at home, Akron on the road, another powderpuff, and then either Washington with a new QB, or BC at home…

by noro on Nov 29, 2009 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

Of course

Most of those teams are looking at us and thinking the same thing.
