Syracuse Orange vs. UConn Huskies GameThread

Syracuse Orange at Connecticut Huskies, Nov 28, 2009 12:00 PM EST

Sitrus_-_uconn_sign_medium

This is it.  A chance for Syracuse to win five games in a football season for the first time since 2004.  Standing in their way...the UConn Huskies.  Last week the Orange kick-started the budding football rivalry with Rutgers.  A win today could do the same for our Connecticut counterparts, who need a win in order to become bowl eligible.  Let's see what we can do to prevent that.

Leave your pre, in- and post-game comments below.  G'Orange!

Why?

What is this… girl scouts?

by ezcuse on Nov 28, 2009 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Just woke up and turned on the TV to ESPN. Two minutes later I was like SHIT WE HAVE A GAME. GO ORANGE, CRUSH THE HUSKIES!

by Orange22 on Nov 28, 2009 12:07 PM EST reply actions

Rob Long is displeased. Several UConn fans have spontaneously dropped dead.

by Orange22 on Nov 28, 2009 12:13 PM EST reply actions

He’s missed every field goal he’s taken. Which is 0. Since he’s not our field goal kicker.

He had a 13 yard punt.

by Orange22 on Nov 28, 2009 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

i want to strangle the announcer

who keeps saying, “Instant field position.” It makes no sense! You can have good field position or bad field position, but instant field position? That’s just idiotic.

by MrPlow99 on Nov 28, 2009 12:23 PM EST reply actions

I heard this too and it hurt my brain.

“You catch that ball and you’ve got instant field position!” Right, it’s called a forward pass. What a concept!

Just got here

Looks like we at least had a nice drive. Too bad it ended in a FG

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Nov 28, 2009 12:38 PM EST reply actions

Great

Special Teams once again

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

rob long is the best player on uconn today

oh wait, he’s on our team? kid better wake up

by orngfan on Nov 28, 2009 12:43 PM EST reply actions

seven yard punt???

i can understand a 20 yard punt bc of wind but SEVEN! seven? come on. you need to overcome the intangibles..

by orngfan on Nov 28, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

At least the run back for a touchdown is hard to blame on rob long. It was an okay punt into the wind. The coverage is shit.

by Orange22 on Nov 28, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

Actually...

Long has been at the forefront of several debacles… the missed XP… the punts TO Guy… blocked punts last week… woefully out of position on long returns… short punt today… terrible kickoffs. How the fuck can’t you kick a touchback with that wind????

Seriously… we need someone who can handle kickoffs next year. It’s worth a scholarship.

by ezcuse on Nov 28, 2009 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

TD

As long as we don’t have to play special teams, we could stick around in this game.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Nov 28, 2009 12:54 PM EST reply actions

wind's at our back now

so hopefully this next kick goes for a touchback

by MrPlow99 on Nov 28, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

nice play-calling & execution on that drive

great adjustment by Owen on a ball thrown behind him for the TD

by MrPlow99 on Nov 28, 2009 12:54 PM EST reply actions

God damn the penalties!

by Orange22 on Nov 28, 2009 1:01 PM EST reply actions

NICE

Refs helping us out

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Nov 28, 2009 1:07 PM EST reply actions

So

When UConn plays in MSG, do the “experts” claim it a home game for them like they do for us?

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

by PoetryInMoten on Nov 28, 2009 1:11 PM EST reply actions

of course not

it’s in a totally different state

by MrPlow99 on Nov 28, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

But confusingly Tampa is not a home game for UF.

by Orange22 on Nov 28, 2009 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

6 big East teams closer to NYC than Syracuse is

And Georgetown is about equal.

Of course, it’s not UConn’s or ’Nova’s home game at MSG, it’s Syracuse’s home game!

by wildcatlh on Nov 28, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

This team is giving me a migraine.

by Orange22 on Nov 28, 2009 1:23 PM EST reply actions

WTH was that, greg?

by Orange22 on Nov 28, 2009 1:30 PM EST reply actions

Well

That sucked. Also, I really hope the Big East pulls UConn aside and says, “Um, the Big East IS a BCS conference. Can you please upgrade your generic Wal-Mart uniforms? Thanks.”

Difference between Rutgers and today

#1… penalties. Not only do we get penalties, we get them at the worst times. Sigh.

#2… drops. None against Rutgers. Two big ones today. Not just because they are drops, but also makes it 2nd and 10.

#3… turnovers. Carter, for all his good running, has a lot of work to do. Can’t block well. Complete stone hands on that pitch.

by ezcuse on Nov 28, 2009 1:55 PM EST reply actions

Just not

feeling it today. Not sure if I really want to stick around for the 2nd half.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

Think of how much it will suck on Wednesday

when there will be no more games for 9 months.

by ezcuse on Nov 28, 2009 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

special teams

yes we have like 50 players dressed but come on. speial teams has lost us a couple games this year. this is looking to be another… god this is a frustrating team.

by nhcuse on Nov 28, 2009 1:59 PM EST reply actions

What's the deal

with UConn and shady ref calls? Seems like they attract this stuff

Syracuse needs to leave the Big East

If we are going to get screwed by refs, we might as well be somewhere new.

Only 20% serious.

But not 0% serious.

by ezcuse on Nov 28, 2009 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Well

I guess I’ve stuck around this long in the season, I might as well stick around for another drive.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

why not

One more chance to savor SHAMARKO

How many

People are at this game??? 50? The band is really annoying.

Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10

Stupid, stupid, stupid

You don’t decline that penalty knowing they are going for it on 4th down…

not to be an optimist

but Paulus is having a tremendous game.

2008 again

Big win in next-to-last game. Defense gets steamrolled to end season.

Not just an asshole. A traitor AND an asshole.

by Orange22 on Nov 28, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah wtf

Dick moves, UConn. I guess they want a rival. Big mistake as we look toward the future. This will be their last win for awhile in this series.

by DMF on Nov 28, 2009 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

The good news...

56 points is going to really appeal to the Kansas faithful. Offer up $3M a season for ol Randy and let him turn it down. Or accept. Or force UConn to match…makes sense that he would make more than Calhoun.

by ezcuse on Nov 28, 2009 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

What an assbag.

Up by 11 with a minute left against your Alma mater and you call a pass to the endzone?! Fucking Judas! I hope Marrone piles it on you at the first chance he gets and at every chance he gets. No class. No respect. Better take your shots at us while you can. Don’t get used to it.

by nc44 on Nov 28, 2009 4:13 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Marrone

It seemed like Marrone had something to say to Edsall after the game. Perhaps, “Good game asshole – beat you next year.” I wonder what was said.

by DMF on Nov 28, 2009 3:38 PM EST reply actions

The other good news...

I don’t see two many teams falling over each other to get Shafer either.

by ezcuse on Nov 28, 2009 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

There was defintely something

going on. Marrone probably pissed about that last offensive TD

Hey.... I know.

Let’s move Casullo to just Associate Head Coach… and then hire Kragthorpe to be our special teams coach. I bet he comes cheap with a 2-year buyout.

by ezcuse on Nov 28, 2009 3:40 PM EST reply actions

I left after the 4th down and missed that last TD

You stay classy UConn. Way to improve your BCS ranking. Revenge better be sweet in the Dome next year.

I'll save my commentary on the season for the last couple of posts

but suffice to say, with the weapons we bring back I’m genuinely excited for next year. Going to be a long 9 months, but at least the hoops team will keep us going over the winter. For Doug next year obviously the recruiting is going to be important, but a huge task will be to get this team used to competing, which means not shooting ourselves in the foot. Where does the game swing against them today?
A) Special teams. THey take one back for a TD, we fair catch on our four yard line.
B) 4th down. They convert a key 4th and 6 because we had no pass rush. We face a blitz, which leads to holding, which would have negated the easy first down we should have had, but didn’t because of another dropped pass.
C) We did have alot of big plays on offense, but some drops were crucial. They were making circus catches and hanging on to the ball.
D) We lost an enormous fumble recovery because a CB lined up in the neutral zone. I can honestly say I don’t remember ever seeing that in 20+ years of watching football.
