Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

That's what wins over Cal and North Carolina will get you. Despite the fact the Orange have been the most impressive team to date, they still remain behind shaky Villanova and Kentucky. The Orange did get one first-place vote in the AP...who's the true believer?

Why Sean

I had no idea you had a vote in the AP poll. The NunesMagician influence continues to grow.

3-0?

Both polls say Nov. 20 and show Syracuse as 3-0. This makes me think that the voting was in before the UNC game. In which case, there’s only one way to go…UP. So long as we don’t blow it this week against Cornell and Columbia.

I don't think so...

Otherwise Carolina would not have suffered the drop. They pretty much dismantled Ohio State, other than that late run at the end.

Too high

Right now we are the team with the best resume, true, but a lot of it was good fortune. We got Cal without their best player, coming off a 6 hour flight and shooting poorly. We hammered home what Roy Williams has been saying all season. Turn overs, shooting and guard play… North Carolina’s big issues. He will get them right. We won 2 in MSG… essentially a home game, against two overrated teams. Im nervous it will be more of our opponents being rated too high as opposed to us being too low. (Remember when we beat UofL in football? GRobs signature win. ARobs coming out party as the greatest QB in the big east? Turned out not to be such an upset, we just exposed them for what they were)

Id rather be the underrated team… #15 to 20. We always play better that way. Im terrified of Cornell. Yes our zone looks amazing and stretches beyond the 3… but if someone can shoot us out of it, we will have to play man. Ask Lemoyne how our man is.

Andy and AO scare the crap out of me. Brad Pike better be doing amazing preventive stuff with them because each has shown to be injury prone. Scoop is going to have a let down game. Lets just hope its not the same day as Triche looks his age.

Ahhh… Im just afraid we are peaking too early. We DOMINATED these teams and thats going to make our players very cocky. Close wins would have toughened us up. Its all too soon.

That being said… I hope they prove me wrong. Im just trying to fuel our guys because they seem to be motivated by doubters.

GO ORANGE!

youre a brave man...

coming on here making that “essentially a home game” argument

by Sadler1 on Nov 23, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Well if the players are experiencing anything like I’ve experienced they can’t get cocky because they lost to Lemoyne.

I’m not worried and I think the ranking is fair given our resume vs. everyone elses. You can’t really complain about how its going so far. It has a been a pleasant surprise. The Cal game, I understand why we didn’t get props for it, but UNC is a big win. You can’t talk me out of not feeling good about that. They can shoot 3’s too and really even with the shotty PG play they still housed Ohio State. Everyone was on their jock before that game. Plus word on the Twitterverse was there were more UNC fans than Cuse fans. Not necessarily a home game.

I think JB will keep this team focused.

by JRSu1 on Nov 23, 2009 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

I was at the game

There were slightly more UNC fans than SU fans. It was definitely not a home game.

One thing which gives me more confidence than I had with the last few teams and makes me think they haven’t peaked yet and will only play better is that this team plays defense agressively. Defense wins titles. Just ask the 03 team who dominated the tourney by playing a stifiling zone. Because of this defense the easy layups and dunks that we get off turnovers will always be there even when the shooters are cold.

True...

but he kind of has a point. MSG is Carrier Dome East.

If we were talking about a 2-point win

where the crowd and refs swayed the game, sure. But SU beat the snot out of both those teams and UNC had a decent crowd, MSG was irrelevant.

Oh

I’m not saying that that’s “why” we won, and in such convincing fashion. Just that I think the Orange players naturally feel comfortable in that building because a) they ALWAYS draw a good partisan crowd, b) it’s not that far of a trip for them, and c) they are so used to playing there because of pre-season tournaments, games against St. John’s, the BET, etc. Not taking away anything from what they did. Just backing up Ryan’s devil’s advocate observation a bit.

very true

most non-cuse fans i’ve seen at a game at the garden.

Unc game was a neutral crowd game from all published reports. Of course when you start off both Halves on huge runs it might not have seemed like that on tv

by brendoh on Nov 23, 2009 2:56 PM EST via mobile reply actions

It was definitely split

Evenly, if not tilted in favor of UNC just slightly. At least, during pre-game introductions the UNC players got what felt (subjectively) like louder cheers. However, as they were introduced second, their fans might have had motivation to be louder than the Cuse fans who had already cheered…?

Just call it a split. You might be able to argue that SU had the slight advantage of not being awed by the arena since they’d all (save Triche) been there before, but I doubt that would have really happened, and even if some UNC players were all “golly gosh” on Thursday night it ought to have worn off by Friday.

the crowd was pretty even

I think – there were pockets of either team’s fans (and our day-glo orange is always easy to spot) but there was a big UNC fan presence.

by sportzbelle on Nov 23, 2009 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

oh and anyone know

why Otto and our cheerleaders didn’t make the trip? UNC had theirs….

by sportzbelle on Nov 23, 2009 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Though the band was there

which was cool. Presumably the ‘backups’ who have not yet earned their place on the marching band field. Or do they have two completely separate groups of students forming the bands for FB and BB?

I think the bball band is like the elite of the band kids. Not sure tho.

by ryanwk628 on Nov 23, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

yes they are totally different organizations

composed of a lot of the same kids but a good amount do one or the other. I’m not even sure who the band at MSG was, because I am 99% sure that nobody from our pep band made the trip.

by bwelch37 on Nov 23, 2009 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

That was a high school band

dressed in Orange. The Sour Sitrus Society did not make the trip.

Go, fight, and win.

Does any one know

….where you can actually see the voting online? I know there is a website where you can look at the voting breakdown (at least for the AP). I just can never seem to remember the site and it does not come up on google.

I’m waiting for them to update so we can see who voted SU #1

maybe it was that one guy from last year

that completely left us off his list when everyone else had us at like 12.

by actioncuse on Nov 23, 2009 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

apparently Decourcy of Sporting News

said SU deserved to be #1 because they’ve done the most, but a) that’s terrible logic b) Idk if he has an AP vote (I would assume so) c) not 100% if he actually said that, but that’s what I was told by a friend.

You’ll be happy to know the bookstore in Schine is now selling “Underrated??!” t-shirts

Which makes complete sense now that we’re top 10 in the nation. Riight
