The Scoop & Wes Show: Syracuse 95, Cal 73

Forget LeMoyne.  Forget the preseason rankings (or lack thereof).  Forget everything you've been hearing.  Syracuse is a good basketball team.  And for all the excuses that you'll hear tomorrow (It's like a home game...Theo Robertson was out..), Syracuse absolutely dominated the No. 12 team in the nation tonight.   For Syracuse fans who have been suffering through football season and had to deal with the LeMoyne blowback...tonight's win over Cal was a lot of fun.

Scoop Jardine scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out six assists and added four steals, as Syracuse dominated from the start in an emphatic 95-73 rout of 13th-ranked California in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.

Wesley Johnson recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Arinze Onuaku added 12 points for the Orange (3-0), who advanced to Friday's title game against the North Carolina-Ohio State winner.

The zone looked strong for most of the night and the Orange took advantage of the size differential down low.  The Bears were a mere 6-20 from three-point range.

For their part, Syracuse shot 57.1 percent and made nine three-pointers, including two each from Andy Rautins, Mookie Jones and Wes Johnson.  Johnson especially made tonight his coming-out party to the nation with some aerobatics and great play...though he could have made 1 or 2 more dunks along the way.  From what we saw tonight...he will.

Probably an overreaction on my part

But I’d kind of like to see more of Kris Joseph’s minutes go to Mookie Jones.

No defense

Watching Mookie at the end of that game, he plays the ole defense. It was awful. I know it was at the end of a blowout, but for someone fighting for more playing time he needs to stop people when he is on the court.

agree

Joseph is more well rounded – besides, KJ is playing the 3/4 and mookie is more of a 2. I think there’s a role for mookie, on nights when the team is struggling to score I could see JB putting him in to try and spark the offense.

nah, i like joseph’s versatility…mookie wont hit the low block

Great win.

And one we needed. I feel like Syracuse could play with almost anyone in the country now. Let’s not get this win get to our heads though. We still have Carolina or OSU tomorrow night, plus a BIG trap game coming up against Cornell.

Better our wake-up game come against LeMoyne than against, say, Cleveland State?

hell yeah

i’ve been saying since the lemoyne “game” that it was better to get the home loss in an exhibition than in the real season. smooth sailing from here…

BK: This guy is on fire, he is really smokin'.
KenKo: Oh yeah, Bill? What's he smokin'?

nice win

nice to see active hands on defense would like to see less donte greene style flash and just put the ball in the hoop.

Indeed.

After the missed dunk and oop, if someone had a fast break I’d scream at the TV, “Just put the ball in the basket!” I was happy to see Jardine just lay it in each time.

Man, that was fun to watch.

Completely unexpected, and so exciting. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen so much activity on defense. And the offense was smooth, with lots of passing and movement. This team may be younger, but it seems to be made from a completely different set of players.

Before I get too excited, I’ll wait to see how tonight goes. But we have seen how good this team can be.

Tonight

Tonight is going to be fun, fun, fun. It’s exactly like football, except the opposite.

Tell me about it.

I wonder why I’m even going to the football game on Saturday.

That didn't work

Oh well. Where the hell did Scoop come from? If I lose 20 lbs will I be awesome at basketball too?
