Syracuse Vs. Cincinnati GameThread
Cincinnati Bearcats at Syracuse Orange, Oct 31, 2009 12:00 PM EDT
Syracuse looks to shock the world as they take on the high-powered offense of Cincinnati. Win and The Quest for Toronto looks extremely doable. Lose and...well, its not like we weren't supposed to.

Soooooo, no crowd on hand, and nobody watching the game?
It took exactly two plays for Cincinatti to make up the yards we saved by punting. We’re playing the 5th ranked team in the country, why are we playing like we have anything to lose?

Well that was easy, good thing there was no SU fans there to see it.

At least
we’re having some success on offense. Just need the D to hold and maybe we can stay in this game
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
You would think we were playing a Division 1-AA team
So dissapointed at the crowd. Unfortunate.
seriously
I hear Cincy fans cheering in the background, echoing off the empty seats

beautiful drive
they’re running a good game plan on offense, now we need the D to sit back on passes and not completely sell out on Collaros scrambling, seriously, they had to sit back and let the D line try to handle him, don’t lose the receivers.
Sure hope he will be alright, hate seeing any player going down, even more so been it’s a head shot.
First our pleasures die - and then Our hopes, and then our fears - and when These are dead, the debt is due, Dust claims dust - and we die too.
Does anyone else agree
that we’re playing a bend don’t break D today? Not many blitzes. I’ve been reading this week that Cincy destroys teams that blitz. But this guy is a back up. My head hurts.
You know, I get playing off of a receiver when he is faster than you.
you don’t want to get beat big, especially on first or second down. But on 3rd and three, when you are ten yards off the receiver, how can you hope to stop the first down? You don’t give up the 60 yard play, only 8 small plays ina row that move 60 yards.

Touchdown Nebraska on a block punt!
Has nothing to do with anything but the guy’s feed I’m watching keeps switching to other games when it goes to commercial and that was a nice touchdown.

What I don't get...
Students, it cost zero dollars to attend. During my time there, no one went out on Friday nights. Why is the student section still empty? Guess the Robinson fatigue for the upperclassmen is still in effect.
ummm
why is there no ineligible receiver downfield? Number 60 is almost in the endzone

SUTER
What the hell, no need to come inside, he’s the safety, there were 4 guys back there on the QB, he should have been looking for guys coming across. BS no call on the ref too! UNBELIEVABLE.
There we go!

Absolute Horseshit.
We get it Big East. You’re giving Cincy the Florida treatment. What the hell is the point of the 5 yard buffer.
There we go... Again!

At least
Iowa is getting beaten. Maybe once they lose the BE will finally get some respect it deserves as a BCS conference
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
Glad to see Cincy's defense
can grab a receivers jersey from behind with no penalty.
When their reffing a team that could lead the Big East to the championship game i think you let some things slide.
First our pleasures die - and then Our hopes, and then our fears - and when These are dead, the debt is due, Dust claims dust - and we die too.
looked like they "missed" that downfield
contact on Williams too. Everyone the announcers noticed it.
The Bearcats going to the championship game would be huge for the big east, not that the refs are bias or anything…
I’m not saying… I’m just saying.
First our pleasures die - and then Our hopes, and then our fears - and when These are dead, the debt is due, Dust claims dust - and we die too.
Cincy is not going to the Championship game
Even at 12-0, they didn’t play a schedule like Syracuse, or even USF or WVU.
Oregon St. and Fresno St. are nice.. .not going to get it done. Maybe if Illinois had been good this year.
To many third down and longs, can’t keep playing like this.

We needed points
we needed at least 3 to end the half, that ball by Paulus I think is unforgivable. Now Cincy is going to get 3 at least.
That INT
may be what ultimately kills us. Need to get at least 3 on that drive. But overall a decent 1st half by both sides of the ball
Without Gerry McNamara we wouldn't have won 10 f-- games, not 10
To be fair to Paulus on that INT
If Williams isn’t interfered with he’s at least up there and gets his hands on the ball.
Excellent game plan so far
Our offense is moving the ball. Our defense is hanging in there.
The Big East refs continue to be subpar. Pretty sad when you wish you had Big 10 refs.
Three things we need to do to win the game.
Stop the big pass plays that will kill us.
Limit the turnovers, they will take advantage and we will have no chance.
Eat up that damn clock.
First our pleasures die - and then Our hopes, and then our fears - and when These are dead, the debt is due, Dust claims dust - and we die too.
As usual
We once again are competitive. Maybe G-Rob would have had us 2-6 at this point… but we would have had 4 blowout losses by now, including today. Cincy has needed mega-breaks just to be up by 7 points.

Paulus is not clutch in the redzone
INTs and overthrown passes in the past. Need to stick to the run and rely less on Paulus.

"(BARF)" - Donovan McNabb, during his game winning drive against Virginia Tech in 1998
i feel like a bad fan bitching about the refs. sorry to all
it’s just we’re blantantly getting robbed and the team is playing pretty decent. I remember the Va tech upsets from earlier in the decade and it would be nice to experience one of thos sometimes. Especially since this fits into the trap game scenario (bad team road game, backup qb, etc.) and it’s soo close. Go Orange.
It’s like we don’t have a secondary.

I keep coming back to the Maine game
there was a coach who came into a game his team wasn’t supposed to have any business being in, and he threw the kitchen sink in and almost pulled off a historic upset. We on the other hand, punt from enemy territory. Are we playing to win, or just not lose by alot?

What sucks is that no one gave them a chance (me included) but they had their chances and this should be a close if not tied game ‘shrugs’
This team really needs to learn how to win, they are way to use to losing and have yet not learned how to beat the teams that they’re not supposed to.

so i should spend money to not enjoy myself and make su think i am ok with them losing? I dont wanna boo because I don’t believe Paulus or whomever I would boo is at fault. the players work hard. and if recruits don’t want to come becaue of fans, sure. I bet losing games isn’t the REAL number one factor that recruits won’t come here. And BY THE WAY even at our greatest SU got the same caliber recruits as we do now, we just coached them better. Here is hoping Marrone can do better than G Rob did. At least Coach P was competitive.
And I stuck through SU for a while. I still watch games. I am still a fan. But I won’t give my money to D.Gross.
Except when Coach P wasn't
or unless you consider 51-0 close.
your joking right?
Please don’t make me pull up all the game Coach P won or stayed competitive in. Listen, I think 6-6 is no where close to where SU should get given out school history. We should be a top25 team year in and out. But honestly. one bad game doesnt make a career and Coach P had a good career here.
107-59-1 with only one losing season, 6-3 in bowl games and was in the top 25 almost every year… Yea I would kill to have to have a SU team like that again.
Getting fired after that bad loss to GT was bullshit imo, fell from grace once he left.
First our pleasures die - and then Our hopes, and then our fears - and when These are dead, the debt is due, Dust claims dust - and we die too.
Really
He was unfairly fired though.
Even then, Gross should have made sure he had a better guy ready to take over before making that decision.
Yeah
If they had let him go the year before, that’s fine. If they’d let him go at the end of the regular season, despite the weird share of the 2004 conference title and the lowest-tier bowl game, it would have been understandable, if sort-of iffy. But canning him after the bowl game, after almost every top-tier coaching candidate had already been hired… that was a dumb move.
Maybe Coach P goes 6-5 again in 2005, or even 4-7. Probably does, in fact. But at least then the next guy can build around Ray Rice.
We should not be a top 25 team year in and year out
That was possible when the BE was watered down with terrible Temple, terrible Rutgers, and terrible Pitt. Pitt in the 1990s was absolutely awful. So we started out every 7-game conference season with 3 wins.
NOW… Rutgers is good… Temple is gone… Pitt is good… our OOC is much tougher. UConn’s development gives us recruiting competition in the thin New England area. Rutgers and Pitt are keeping more players home. Penn St.’s resurgeance adds another. South Florida has added a Florida recruiting team to the mix.
It’s just a different world now.
Oh… and Coach P lost by 20 or more on 29 occasions. I am sure he would lose 3 or 4 this year too.
Coach P
Coach P also had us in a bowl game every year and beat highly ranked Virgina Tech, Miami, Colorado, Boston College teams. You forget that WVU played for the Nat. Champ. in 1988 right before the 90’s kicked off and Miami was perenially good and VT played for a national champ in 1999. We won the big east title regularly. We played Tenn to a one point game in 1998. We had Freeney, McNabb, Darius, Bullock, Jackson, Smith (Anthony), Ponds, Jones, Smith (Will) and Marvin Harrison. All of these players were recruited by Coach P. People who say McNabb came here cause of Coach Mac clearly don’t notice that he came 4 years after Mac left. We played an OOC that was typically tough with Tenn, Colorado, Auburn, and others consistently on it.
And Coach P coach SU for 167 games. a 29/167 rate is a helluva lot better than our current rate.
Cincy vs Pitt
Who takes it? Ive said Bearcats winning it from the start so no point in changing now.
First our pleasures die - and then Our hopes, and then our fears - and when These are dead, the debt is due, Dust claims dust - and we die too.
Ugh
Red zone turnovers killed us. Cincy didn’t look very impressive, but naturally, when Syracuse handed them the game, they were good enough to take it. This is a classic “coulda, woulda, shoulda” game. We had so many opportunities to close the gap, and just continuously shot ourselves in the foot. This story is so old and tired and it hurts to see it play out week after week.

On a positive note.
We didn’t have “should-have games” with G-Rob. We had “Wow we suck” games. So improvement is always nice. We can’t expect this team to beat #5 in the nation after being quite awful last year.

Haha
Very true!
"(BARF)" - Donovan McNabb, during his game winning drive against Virginia Tech in 1998
Hey
- Marrone said after last week’s game that he would give the team a plan to win. We do a better job in the red zone and this game gets a lot more interesting.
- I hope the refs are content. One of the worst officiating games in a long time. Not even pretending that Cincy was not supposed to leave the Dome with a victory. If they are just that brutal, they should fine new hobbies.
- Defense can stand proud. They kept Cincy looking like Cincy for the most part. TDs on broken plays, etc.
- On the FG… if they call illegal receiver downfield, wouldn’t they get to kick a FG again? I tend to think its a 10-7 game at that point…. not 7-7. I like the guy up above commenting that he knew they would fake. Yeah… I am sure their fake involves a low snap. Idiot.
Nothing to be particularly happy about… but it’s great when you lose by the expected margin to the #8 team and you are still watching with interest in the 4th quarter. It’s better than dropping to a 28-0 deficit in the early 2nd quarter and having it be meaningless from there. ESPNU didn’t ever consider shifting to a “more competitive game.”
thoughts...
Definite woulda shoulda, coulda game . Two turnovers inside the red zone are just brutal. Otherwise thats a completely different game. I’ll echo the above comments that at least Syracuse is in these games and not getting blown out. Its a definite sign of improvement. But still, this seems to be the story of the season for the Cuse. Minnie, USF, and even Penn State had a lot of plays where you like like if we had executed when it mattered most it would have been a different game.
As for the Nassib Paulus situation, it seems clear to me that the coaches have lost the faith in Paulus to call a downfield pass for him. In the last two weeks i dont think he’s thrown any more than 5 total passes longer than 10 yds. While I’m not one of those fans who is going to boo Paulus, I think its clearly time to give the reigns to Nassib. Our offense seems to have way more options when he enters the game.
One last thing, the crowd was attrocious. 33k for a game against the number 5 team in the country. Really? I know noon games suck but with free student tickets and 10 dollar normal ticket deals it was really another pathetic turnout.
CUSE '13
In defense of the fans
8 home games is a lot… but 6 in a row really waters down the product.
I think the best case scenario is 7 home games out of 12, and without the big streak.
Then again, I’d like to see us play our easiest game first. It would be nice to let one of our teams ramp up in schedule difficulty. You know… like 90% of other programs do.
I don't buy this (the home game streak/number of home games)
Plainly, it’s bullshit.
The hoops team will play four games in a row in the Dome in, like, 10 days at the end of November/beginning of December.
It’ll play six home games in less than a month from mid-December to mid-January (there’s also a eight day span where it’ll play three home games).
Will Syracuse draw at 40% capacity in these streaks (about 12K fans per game)? I doubt it. Weather will be worse and the competition (for at least parts of the streaks) is worse than the home football slate this year. And there’s more games to watch in that period than the football streak.
It’s just fair-weather fandom. No more excuses. People need to get out and support this program.
Hey
Gone are the days of 22K for December basketball games, 28K for all Big East games, and 30+ for the big ones. That’s my recollection of the 1980’s.
How often are there 50% capacity for games in December? Things have just changed. Part of it may be TV. I don’t know.
There is a certain degree of fair-weather fandom. Obviously there is.
I think we lost attendance momentum during the Coach P era. And G-Rob just squashed it. We’ll get it back.
