Syracuse No. 25 In Preseason Coaches Poll
They might have peaked somewhere around No. 3 in many way-too-early polls back in April but the Syracuse Orange basketball team that will actually take the floor in 2009-2010 is checking in at No. 25 to kick things off. Here's what USA Today has to say about it's final Top 25 participant.
Orange will have different look following the departure of several mainstays, including star point guard Jonny Flynn. Wing Andy Rautins is back with F Rick Jackson and C Arinze Onuaku. F Wes Johnson, an Iowa State transfer, is expected to be a big contributor.
That's pretty much the party line for every preview of Syracuse so far.
The Big East is well represented with six teams though unlike last year, they're bottom-heavy in the Top 25 instead of top-heavy. In other words, folks aren't nearly as high on the conference as they used to be. Villanova leads the way at No. 6 followed by No. 9 West Virginia, No. 14 Connecticut, No. 21 Georgetown, No. 23 Louisville and the Orange. Notre Dame and Pittsburgh both received votes as well.
As Mike Waters notes, all three teams that the Orange could face in the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer Classic are currently ranked (No. 12 Cal, No. 4 North Carolina & No. 17 Ohio State). Syracuse early-season opponent Cornell is also among the "also receiving votes" selections.

Way too high.
This team was barely a top-20 team last year, and that was with Devo, Harris, and Flynn. Johnson is good, but replacing those 3 isn’t going to be easy. This will be a struggle for the final bid, not a dash to the top of the Big East.

Are you saying we were barely Top 20 to start last year or end it?
Because before those 3 bolted, we were pretty much a consensus Top 10 and a Final Four favorite. I don’t think 25 is way too high. Rautins pretty much proved himself just as valuable if not more so than Devo. Harris was a talent, but erratic. Wes could easily be much, much better. Flynn is obviously the huge loss. But I think 25 is about right for the moment. I suspect we will finish higher than that though.

barely a top ten?
Syracuse’s final ranking in the AP Poll was 13 last year. Btw, I didn’t see Penn St ranked.

What? We were definitely a top 20 team last year. Like Nola said we would be top 5 if we didnt lose 3 starters. You don’t plummet that far by losing 3 people. While we didn’t officially reload, I’d argue our replacements are just fine. I think we’ll finish in the 15th range this year.
Clearly you don’t follow Syracuse basketball at Penn State.

funny
I was a hardcore, SU only fan until a year ago. I know my Syracuse. I’m just always pessimistic about teams who lose their dynamic players. We know what Onuaku, Jackson, and Rautins can do, and they’re nice complimentary pieces. But until I see Wes Johnson or Triche, I’m reserving my optimism.

we are going to take our lumps with this early season schedule. But I think Wes > Paul, Andy replaces Devo’s shooting and the PG platoon uses size over speed combined with less TOs. More of an outside inside team this year, but if Ricky improves half as much as he did last year with a healthy AO we may have the best front court in the league.

I think we will be ranked higher come the end of the year.
But I like where we are. Lower expectations are always a good thing for us.

I imagine if we snag 1 victory in the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament, we’ll probably jump in the rankings. If we beat Cal and UNC/OSU expect us to shoot up the rankings quickly. This ranking could swing very early in the year.
I think we are a 2nd round NCAA team. Sweet 16 would be a successful season. Next year I expect Final 4 or bust!

Seems about right
In the top 20 would have been a reach; outside of the top few ‘others recieving votes’ would have been silly.

Better too low than too high in the preseason
SU always seems to do better when they are underrated. I think that’s just the way it goes with young, college players – gives them that extra fire. I think this team can definitely be better than last year’s – hopefully AO doesn’t have any knee problems that limited him for a stretch. Jackson is only going to keep getting better. Johnson is a marked improvement over Harris – both offensively and defensively. He’s 4" taller on that back line of the 2-3. Rautins proved himself to be at least equal with Devo last year and with fewer bonehead turnovers, notably in transition. Triche and Scoop won’t be Flynn (who could be?!) but they’re bigger guards that may fit better at the top of that 2-3 with Rautins. With the other guys, they won’t be called upon to handle the scoring load, they just need to look for the other guys and hold onto the ball.
I really think this team could prove to be better than last year’s team. Devo and Harris aren’t huge losses – they kept things interesting, but their replacements are better, in my opinion. I expect the biggest improvement to be on defense where we’re looking at 6’4" and 6’5" at the top instead of 6’ and 6’3" (and Devo was nothing special on D). And down low, Johnson instead of the much shorter Harris…and sometimes Rautins even found himself down there.
Can’t wait for Nov 9 on ESPNU against Albany.
Last thing – Southerland’s shooting was totally unexpected by me. He could be a great weapon off the bench. I don’t know why, but I expected him to be more of a slasher than a long-range threat.

I had Syracuse around this point. We’re definitely top 30 material. Everyone’s talking about how the loss of Jonny Flynn got us from good to bad; it got us from broken (in the good way) to just good. We have a tough schedule; I’m looking to go to CvsC this year and watch the guys play (I just need some buddies to go with).
