Ernie Davis Field Unveiled

As you know, Ernie Davis Legends Field was introduced this past weekend.  We discussed earlier how we should probably quit it with the Ernie Davis honors for the sake of our current football program, but it's nice to show Big E we care.

As for the finished product?  The name grew on me since Saturday.  That's probably the best we could have hoped for.  Doesn't overpower the field but gets the message across.  I approve.

As for the 44's on the 44-yard-line, I can't help but be a little disappointed.  See them?  There's one tucked in the lower left corner on the sideline.  I would have loved to have seen them in the center of the field, on each side of the giant S. Seems like it would have been perfect.  Maybe you can't do that, I don't know, but it would have been cooler.  That's all I'm sayin'

Lots of important people on hand for the dedication.  Famed SU running back Jim Brown spoke and looked like he wanted to fight every single person in the building.  And he could have.  Vice-President and SU alum Joe Biden spoke via recorded message (which you can watch on SUAthletics.com).  He even gave a shout-out to Jim Brown, who should have won the Heisman as well.  Also on hand were Martin Luther King III, Ernie's uncle Chuck Davis and lacrosse hall-of-famer Chief Oren Lyons (DOC Gross was there too...don't worry).

The Dedication

Easily one of the weirdest things I have seen in memoriam of someone… I was extremely surprised by the inclusion of Joe Biden and MLKIII. Felt that they were completely pointless in the celebration, and just kind of awkward. I was confused as to what i needed to cheer for.

Totally agree with you

About the 44’s being on the field, or something to that effect. I’m sure you’re not surprised, given my fixation with “44,” that I would want to see it more prominently displayed.

im pretty shocked thats how the 44s looked

i thought they would be ON the field.. not on the sidelines.. the whole thing is bushleague if u ask me. tarnishing davis’ legacy with this nonsense where we keep getting our teeth kicked in every time we honor the guy. next year are we gonna dedicate the sideline to ernie davis ? maybe the goalposts?

The ‘Ernie Davis’ on the field looks like the Chic-fil-a logo.

I agree with Glaude’s comment on Saturday on Twitter which was something like “Syracuse athletics lead the nation in good idea/intention with poor execution.”
