Doug Gottlieb: Huge Douche, or The Hugest Douche?
We needed a better know thy enemy on Doug Gottlieb.
This morning I was perusing ESPN.com articles on account of 3/4s of my office took the week off and its dead here, when I came across some of Doug Gottlieb's writing. It was an article about point guard play this year where I expected to find some good Flynnformation (yes I combined Flynn and Information, and yes, you can use my new word). Well I couldnt see it because Im not an ESPN Insider, nor will I be on account of I dont want to pay to support Gottlieb.
This lead me to do some searching on the guy. The logical place to start was "Why is Doug Gottlieb such a douche bag?" in google... Then I checked out his wikipedia page.
What did that turn up? Well I was expecting to find he was molested as a boy by a homeless man wearing a syracuse shit he got from Salvation Army or Jimmy B didnt recruit him, the "best of the west pg" who happens to be jewish with an eating disorder (the last part of that is still under investigation) and would be a great fit for this school.
So what did he do? The same thing any other jewish teen would do (Sean)... get in with the Catholics!
After signing a national letter of intent with Notre Dame, Gottlieb was the starting point guard for Notre Dame during the 1995-1996 college basketball season. He started all but four games for Notre Dame during that season.
Well that didnt work out because of some credit card issue. Something about stealing, and $900 later hes getting his AA degree at Golden West College. Well on his way to be a substitute teacher for retarded kids.
But coach Sutton gave him another change at college ball, he went to OSU and was played some ball in europe... whatever no one cares.
Why the beef with SU?
Wikipedia says:
Gottlieb and Syracuse University basketball coach, Jim Boeheim have traded barbs ever since 2005 because of Gottlieb's criticism of Syracuse's soft preseason schedule and Boeheim's comments regarding Gottlieb's difficulties at Notre Dame. Gottlieb and Boeheim refuse to discuss their feud publicly.
A facebook group expands on the feud by chronicling his hypocrisy
March 6 - "Syracuse might have beaten G-town but there still not dancing"
March 7 - "With the win over Uconn Syracuse as stamped its ticket, and should be looking at a 10 seed"
March 11 (Selection Sunday) - "Syracuse doesnt deserve tog et in and the comity got it correct."
Bob Wolfley at JSOnline mentions our beef along with those of other coaches
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim took a swipe at Gottlieb because the analyst said many Big East teams, including Syracuse, played non-conference schedules so soft they are "fraudulent."
Jimmy B has just as much right to call him out as he does to question our schedule. His conviction of misdemeanor fraud is public knowledge.
So who else hates him?
There is a nice USA Today article which gets into his verbal diarrhea.
From there we learn he likes Triple Venti Soy Caramel Macchiatos.
It also details how he ended up at ESPN with a business degree (sorry Newhouse didnt want you)
Gottlieb, who has a business degree, began his broadcasting career in 2002 on WWLS 640-AM, "The Sports Animal," outside Oklahoma City, hosting a midday show until ESPN offered him an audition and hired him.
His thoughts on broadcasting:
"I am the way I am because I would watch guys (while growing up) and think, 'Why don't they just say what they are really thinking?' " Gottlieb says. "Why does everybody have to talk in code?"
Well Doug, its not code, its called Tact and you dont have any. You dont call people idiots or cast jusdgement (especailly someone in your postion) You really cant criticzise teams for being poor from the charity stripe when you shot 46% at OSU. Players for bad decisions when you got kicked out of ND.
Doug has a need to bother people even when not on TV
When he finishes work late at night and the East Coast is asleep, Gottlieb calls his father, a basketball coach for four decades, or his brother in California during the 30-minute ride home.
Its a syndrome.
Dead Spin has a nice Doug Gottlieb chat
Mike Rutherford at Card Chronicle said during an SU Nova game:
Doug Gottlieb is here to remind us how much we loathe that annoying, loud, spiky-haired guy at the bar
DYK Doug has a facebook profile? He has yet to confirm me.
Some of the facebook groups about Doug: Doug Gottlieb: Jerkoff, Doug Gottlieb is the biggest douchebag in the world (answers my question), Fuck Doug Gottlieb: Tru Syracuse Hater, Doug Gottlieb is a piece of shit!!!!, Doug Gottlieb has no penis and several others.
I feel bad for the two dudes with the same name. Thats almost as bad as being named John Clayton.
What do we learn from the facebook groups?
This guy is so smug and a pompous prick. He loves attention, getting it by making smart ass comments with confidence. And no, this part isnt from wikipedia. This is fact.
Well there you go. Its fact. So says some kid on facebook.
We also learn:
DID YOU KNOW? (Doug Gottlieb Edition)....
* Behind powerplants and automobile engines, Doug Gottlieb is the 3rd leading cause of global warming?
* Doug Gottlieb is 0-4,628 at the urinal?
* Doug Gottlieb slept with Davis from The Real World Denver?
* Doug Gottlieb takes his coffe with a two cubes of sugar and a small carafe of sperm?
* The spokes of Doug Gottlieb's childhood bicycle were adorned with Billy Bean baseball cards?
*Doug Gottlieb is a no-talent ass clown?
Yup.
So besides being the "guy who wore his shorts backwards" Doug Gottlieb is a
Douche Bag and if I see him around CT, Ill let him know.
Lets try and use this post to document when he rips cuse and rip him back.

Very
extensive. Nicely done.
I was listening to him the other day and he made some off-hand remark about all the Syracuse guys in his profession and I think that has a lot to do with it. I think he comes across a lot of SU folks in his industry and he harbors some kind of resentment over their perceived (justly) value. He then transfers that disdain to the airwaves where he can belittle the Orange as a way at getting back at them.
Just a thought…he really got irked when he mentioned the SU people “in the industry.”

Still
I like Gottlieb, I know SU people get all in a huff about him, but the guy knows his college basketball and is not afraid to say what he feels. Look at what he said about Eddie Sutton and Oklahoma State and he went there.
“Gottlieb chose the latter, and said Sutton should retire immediately and concentrate on his health. As a result, Gottlieb’s comments have left him at odds with current coach Sean Sutton and others at OSU. After refusing to apologize for his comments, Gottlieb hasn’t been invited back to any events involving former players.”
And about the FT shooting thing, Gottleib always pokes fun at himself about how he shot. I think Syracuse fans need to relax when it comes Gottlieb. As a guy that watches a ton of college basketball I love hearing Gottlieb talk about the game since he knows it so well.
Not only do SU people hate him but everyone hates him because he says it how it is.. Just google hate doug gottlieb and see what comes up. I know no one agrees with me but I like him.

The real issue with Gottlieb is
that its fine to be pro-North Carolina or Duke, have football guys gush over the U and generally plug teams because it does not hurt the programs reputation.
For whatever reason however Dougy Gottlieb has a gripe with SU hoops. Maybe its because we were in the BE for his one year, or that Jimmy B called him out after he knocked our out of conference schedule or as Sean said, all the SU alums working right down the road from me in Bristol. Any ways, he dosent like us and even when SU is not playing, he brings us up to knock us.
Now Im all for the media saying something good about a team, but when you knock it, you hurt it. Perception is reality and these media guys have a tendency towards group think. When he says SU is fraudulent or implies Jimmy B got to 700 on cup cakes other media members may follow suit and start to believe it.
Another concern is that we dont want to have an us against the world, bad guy bunker mentality. If the world keeps hearing we are getting to where we are playing games that might as well not count well they are going to look at us like frauds. Think about how we feel about UConn football. Now think about how everyone outside NYC feels about the Yankees… they are supposed to be good because they spend more. We are supposed to be good because we play no one. Its looked down on and sours other people to you.
My biggest issue is that this guy is on ESPN. His voice gets out there and recruits hear it. If youre a 17 year old high school player thinking about where you want to play, watching a Pitt-ND game and Doug Gottlieb brings up SU and starts knocking anything… say alums in the media, that kid is going to be soured to our program. Thats my biggest concern and thats why MOST members of the media are tactful when it comes to criticism.
As for quoting facebook… its a blog, not even a real entry, a fan post. Who cares? Some one wrote it, I can quote it.

not true
I’m sorry what you said is blatantly not true. He doesn’t bring up SU during non SU games. He just doesn’t. His radio show may be different but I’ve never heard him during a random game just blurt out stuff about Syracuse unless asked.A nd if you think he only says this stuff about Syracuse well I don’t know what to tell you. He says it about EVERYONE! Here’s some proof.
“He regularly picks against Pitt just because he hates that they get love and hype.” – From Pitt Panther Blog
“Can anyone name the last time Doug Gottlieb said anything positive about UNC. He absolutely hates the Heels and constantly seeks ways to criticize them for anything. I, for one, don’t even listen to him talk anymore.”- From the Tar Heel fan blog.
Why Does ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb Hate West Virginia?" – From a West Virginia Blog.
I mean I could go on and on and on. This isn’t just a SU thing and to think it is is just wrong. I’m sorry it is. If you want to say he is doing it for attention and such then that’s a totally different argument and that is a fair point.
As far as recruits , no recruits are watching Gottlieb on TV. I haven’t heard one recruit say, “I would have went to school X but this announcer said something bad so I didn’t go.” That just doesn’t happen. Not to mention the media world is saturated with SU grads. McDonough went on a rant during the MAC title game about how great SU football will be with Marrone. Thats a recruiting pitch if I ever heard one.
I know I sound like a Gottlieb apologist but as a die hard SU fan this is getting to be a little much.

I live in CT
watch UConn games, and a lot of other Big East games. Doug loves to bring up SU… Ive seen him during a Pitt game. If there is a discussion of the NCAA sleection he usues SU as an example.
Putting a team down is never good for recruiting just as booing our team when they dont do well is not good for recruits who may be visiting. Ive been recruited, you dont want to hear bad things about a place youre going to go. Recruits do research, watch games, watch A TON of espn and even read blogs (when you google a school, blogs will come up)
Like buying a car, and some dude starts ranting about how the engines are crap. Its going to impact your perception if you think about it or not.
I dont think its just an SU thing. Seems like a lot of BE teams, but because of a) the media alums and/or b) Jimmy B calling him out the guy has a tainted opinion of our program more so than others.
And as I said before this is a blog fan post, not a news paper… dont take it so seriously

um yeah
its called counter point..didn’t realize I have to agree with everything you say. And I just gave you examples of 2 other non BE schools that don’t like him so I still don’t understand how you think Gottlieb only does this with BE schools and/or SU.

A couple of years ago...
When Jimmy B was asked about reporters knocking his scheduling habits. He made a remark along the lines of “That’s just some guy who was in our league for about a minute and couldn’t cut it.”

Today
Gottlieb at halftime of the Gtown-Pitt game. this is word for word..
" They have all aspects of a very good team. They have a quality pg, a hall of fame coach, you have Arinze Onuaku as a dominant inside guy scoring and rebounding the basketball and now that Andy Rautins and Eric Devendorf are on this team, you can stretch the floor with jump shooting/. Tell me what they don’t have outside of supreme depth like an 8th or 9th guy. This is a good basketball team."

He didn’t trash anyone. He said SU should be beating USF by 25, which is right. They should be. Please stop with the Gottlieb bashing if you’re not going to give him credit for talking up the Orange. Orange fans are totally insane when it comes to rationally looking at an analysts.

Pitt being number 1
Posted by Doug Gottlieb
Pittsburgh is ranked No. 1 in the country, and some might say rightfully so, but I am not one of those who falls lockstep in line.
Pitt fans may think I don’t like them, but that’s ridiculous. The current rankings are bogus for one simple reason: Everyone I know and everyone you know thinks North Carolina is the best team in the country and simply had a bad night. Where in the world did we come up with the philosophy that we must put a team that is undefeated ahead of a one-loss team? Frankly, that is a bit hypocritical.
Being the best team in the best league with the best record in the country does not get you a number 1 ranking? Lots of experts say the top teams in the BE could take UNC.
So if it was not for an off night, they would be undefeated… by that logic SU has an argument for number 1. Number 1 teams dont have off nights against BC at home.
